586 no dash - DOB and 'M' modification question

Went to Cabela's to check on prices and possibly join the 642 club... instead I came home the proud owner of a 586 (no dash). Barrels looks to be excellent, a little finish wear and the cylinder area is a bit gunky (time for a good cleaning...

I was hoping someone might have an approximate DOB for a serial AJD94xx? I gather from similar serials looked up it would be ~1985-6.

I've also read about the 'm' modification for some no-dash 586s - there's no stamp on mine to indicate that it's been done. Is there any way to identify the headspace problem without shipping it back to S&W?

It is not a headspace problem, it is a firing pin bushing problem. The hole for the firing pin is too large and allowed the primer to flow back through the hole and locked the cylinder from rotating.

Most primers are harder than back then and do not cause a problem but if you want it "fixed" call S&W and they will fix it on their dime including shipping. 1 800 331 0852
