So I was talking to the range master yesterday and of course we got to talking about accuracy. He was telling me about his new heavy barrel Savage with 5R rifling that would hold a consistent 1/4 MOA with FACTORY 175 SMKs, he talked about that barrel like it was the best thing ever. Seeing as this guy sights in rifles on a daily basis I have a lot of respect for his opinion on accuracy. I have never shot a 5R barrel before and wanted to get some feedback from other people who have used them, are they really that much better then standard barrels? I know T/C offers them on their rifle, Remington and Savage make them for their higher end precision rifles. What are your thoughts?

The internet is full of information describing perceived benefits to the 5-R™ rifling over conventional styles, but most of this is comparing "apples to oranges" as they are usually comparing one manufacturer's "non 5-R™" to a different manufacturer's "5-R™" barrels. We have honestly seen no significant differences in accuracy or performance between the two styles of rifling when comparing our barrels.

Thank you, Krieger Barrels

FWIW, I have 2 match rifles I had built. One is an Obermeyer with Boot's 5 groove rifling, and the other is a Krieger with 4 groove rifling. It's an individual barrel thing, not a particular rifling style thing when it comes to which is better. You take your chances when you buy any barrel, as well as having the chamber cut. However, if you stick to high quality barrels, the odds are in your favor. Just MHO.

i would agree with Don- I've only owned one 5r (an Icon- it was impressive!) and have been around some. I think the advantage is much less in accuracy because of so many other factors, and would imagine it would be seen more in wear. A 5R rifle barrel might last longer (?) MBE, FWIW

Dunno but my Remington 5R based precision rifle is 1/2MOA accurate with Federal Gold Match at 200 yards. I got some close to 3" groups at 600 yards on a still day. If this accuracy falls off I will get a high end regular one fitted prolly.

In theory, 5R barrels are superior-

However, I have never seen any real world results that prove it.

Would it make a difference in the harmonics of the barrel in lightweight rifles? They would flex more then a heavy match barrel, I notice the TC Icon gets rave reviews for accuracy and it is not a heavy barrel by any means.
