6.5 AR-10 Deer Rifle. Thoughts?

A bolt gun is superior in every way to any pistol grip magazine fed msr for all but the most specialized forms of hunting. The only way an ar10 makes any sense is for something like hog hunting or fast paced varminting where the bulk, weight, and size are worth putting up with for the functional advantage of multiple fast follow up shots..

I own a Savage Axis in 6.5 CM it would make a great deer gun if it was legal for public land here. I love the accuracy of the round, it's easy to hit about .5 moa with it & it's light to carry. I don't know if I would want it in a AR-10, I would think it would be too heavy to carry very far. My woods has a lot of up & down hills, it makes anything you carry feel ten times heaver.

The 6-5 CM is an excellent cartridge, but the rifle you are describing wouldn't be practical for most deer hunting, IMO. Too long and heavy, if you are shooting from a tree stand or ground blind at the fairly short distances associated with most deer hunting.

I own a couple of 6.5 CM LFARs and neither of them is really well-suited for hunting on the move as they are both heavy. My Falkor with the 22” heavy barrel is a little over 15 lbs with a Vortex Razor. The 18” Aero Precision with it’s heavy fluted barrel is just over 13 lbs with a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8 on top of it.

I also have a light 18” barreled Aero Precision M5 in 308 that comes in just over 10 lbs with a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 and that is the route I would go. I would not go with a 22” barreled AR for hunting. Stick with the 18” lightweight profiled barrel for a hunting AR.

All that said, I also have a light weight AR-15 in 6.8 SPC with a 16” fluted barrel and it has been very effective on deer and pigs out to 300 yards and that is the route I would go if you are open to something other than 6.5 CM in an AR. The AR-15 is much lighter and more compact than it’s larger cousin.
