I have a nice Browning Micro Hunter chamered in .308 that I am thinking of switching out to a 20" 6.5x47 lapua for a my daughter. I already have a 6.5 swede and Grendel and really like the caliber. I also reload.

I would like to keep this rifle short and handy. Do you think I would be handicapping myself with a 20" barrel? If you have tried it, what velocity are you getting with 123 gr and 139-140 gr?

Lapua test the 6.5x47 with a 26in barrel for what thats worth. Might depend more on how far you are looking to shoot and even barrel profile. 200 yards? The 20" would be fine. I did look around and did read that your cartidge choice can still build velocity out of a 30" barrel. Found some good reading at -http://www.accurateshooter.com/guns-of-week/gunweek073/

I don't load the caliber but think a 20" 6.5 Lap would make a fine lightweight medium game rifle. There is very little game that hasn't been killed with a 17.7" 6.5 Mannlicher.

Of course I also think that judicious handloading of .308 would work just as well at no added cost.

I've been shooting a 6.5x47 for several years now, and think a 20 inch hunting rifle would be absolutely perfect. I shot several thousand rounds out of my last barrel at 22 inches. I shot the 130 jlk at 2820 with relative ease, so you can probably still get decent velocity with two inches less barrel. You will love the caliber.
I have an TC icon 243 that will eventually end up as an x47. It's just a matter of time.
