Questions:
1. Is a CZ527 chambered in 7.62X39 more accurate than a Ruger Mini-30 chambered in the same?
2. Is 7.62x39 an accurate round at 100 yards?

Background:
My father picked up my Yugo SKS at the range a while back. He did not like the rifle so much (I think he did not like the bayonet or the Grenade Launcher) but was impressed by the cartridge. As a result he picked up a Mini-30.

He is a bench rest shooter, and has been very unhappy with the results he is getting with the Ruger. 3 - 4" groups at 50 yards, regardless of the ammuniton used. I am shooting better than that with the SKS while standing with no support, as is he.

Researching the Mini-30 here on the High road has shown this type of accuracy is typical of the Ruger. It seems to be a thin barrel heating up that causes the lack of accuracy.

Would the CZ be a better choice, or is he expecting too much from the cartridge? I would suspect a 1" group at 50 yards or 2" group at 100, would be acceptable.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on the matter.

You're comparing a semi-auto to a bolt action rifle. Bolt action rifles tend to be more accurate than semi-autos because there are fewer moving parts. SKS's and Mini's aren't known for benchrest accuracy, nor is your typical plinker 7.62x39 ammo.

That said, the CZ 527, given good quality ammo and shot off a rest, should meet your accuracy requirements with no problem.

I think the CZ-527 has the correct 0.311" bore and the Mini-30 has a 0.308" bore and that would lend the CZ to having better accuracy. Has your father ever tried reloading for 7.62x39 in his Mini with 0.308" bullets?

In a bolt action the 7.62x39 is a surpriseingly accurate cartridge. Remember what they built the 6mm ppc off of, which is one of the most accurate cartridges ever developed.

Haven't shot the CZ, and have the mini 30. The mini 30 is rather inaccurate as rifles go. The SKS would likely do better as will some AK-47's.

Now I have shot a friend's Ruger M77 in 7.62x39. I see Ruger bolt guns as iffy, some shoot good, some shoot great, some shoot poorly. But this one shot lights out with even cheap ammo.

So get the Ruger or CZ bolt action. You will get far better accuracy. And yes the 7.62x39 can do at least 1 MOA at 100 yards in a good rifle.
