as some off know i have a 1909 arge in 7x57ai. the reamer used was a tight neck of something like .312 or .314 cant remember back when i got the gun i had a out side neck cuter i dont anymore. id like to make the neck to 7x57 spec so i dont have to try and get a neck cutter. i just fired some today after going thru the brass i have the ones made from 8x57 have thinner necks. i still was getting sticking on the necks after firing them. comes out about .314 after firing. to save money i dont have right now id like to ream it out but reamers are around 80 bucks. i do have a 280ai reamer can i gut go in and touch up the neck with it. i would just recamber it to 208ai but this gun was the last made by a gunsmith that died in the early 2000s. j.w.van patten he was ackleys forman for some years. in the 40s and 50s. the barrel is nicely scripted with his name and 7x57imp. just like to run this by u guy if u can help or ask your gunsmiths. i do not have any one around here very good or one id trust. i am in new york state

you probably COULD get away with it, but the necks are nearly the same length, and 7x57AI has a sharper shoulder angle. If you messed up youd end up with a double angle neck on your cases....which....might be kinda cool, hell on brass tho id think.

Its actually something I might try were i in your shoes, but ive been known to ruin stuff trying things like that. You could maybe put a layer of tape over the shoulder junction of the reamer to hopefully at least give you a chance of not making an unwanted cut if you ran it in too far.

Id suggest renting a neck and throat reamer if your dead set on opening it up.

Honestly getting a neck turning tool, or perhaps asking if someone in reloading would be willing to turn down some necks for you might be a better option.

the thing i can see now with the brass that has 3 firing on it the shoulder is rounded and there is a line almost were the shoulder ends. it goes all the way around the shoulder if i had a 7x57 reamer i could clean it up but the all my brass will be no good and not a real ai were u can shoot factory ammo i will see if i can get a pic that is clear

Here is a pics of the ring don't think it is hurting anything. The shank on the barrel is not very long 280.a. recamber my not be strong. I can get a mcgowen bbl for under 300 just broke right now.

That ring looks like a chip might have gotten caught in the reamer. Hard to say tho.
If you had a Smith locally you could use, or even a good machine shop, I'd take the barrel back a turn and use a standard necked 7x57 reamer to clean the whole thing up a bit.

no smiths here that are any good most are hacks from work i have seen. i dont know if any shops around here would help. my dad has a south bend 9 in pritty claped out tho. i did that 1891 barrel 2 years ago and it was a pain just to make the shank longer going from a 88m to 1891 mauser thread and to get the sights lined up wont one turn be to much

One turns more than necessary, but it would bring the lettering back up where it should be
