I got my scope from WalMart... Bushnell for a C note... Once the barrel was clean, and the cork slivers grabbed the barrel up round the first band, I was putting holes over top one another at 100 yards(Using a bench rest @ Clark Bro.s range here in NoVa).
I have shot the high priced ammo as well as the cheapest Bulgarian tuna tin ammo, and the price just doesn't seem to make much of a difference WRT accuracy or pattern. I purchased my 91/30 with the ATI rail already drilled and in place. Minor tweeks were needed to remove the "Twwaaaanng" that occurred after each fire'ing. However, after a years worth of shooting, I am really pleased with the weapon. It is inexpensive to shoot, Packs a whallllooooopppp tearing through 1/4 steel plate that we have at the end of the range (100yards), classic looks and did I mention it was dirt cheap?
Purchase some J&B paste (it comes in coarse and fine - red and grey) spin slowly using a cleaning rod in a 1/4 drill, moving in and out of the barrel; coarse first for about a minute, then move to fine, and repeate for maybe a minute and a half, then go to usual barrel cleaning with typical solvents and brush, and finally patches.
I'm betting once you put a little TLC into it and get the sights adjusted, its gonna shoot just fine. At that point look into the ATI bolt conversion and rail mod. I seem to recall that the price tag for conversion was about 50 bucks.
