I have some very strong indicators (including being handed a guidebook to apartments in the area and their having one of the 1-year-ago hires step in and chat with me about how she liked her apartment complex after the on-site interview, tour and introductions were complete, among other indicators) that I am going to recieve a job offer for a position in Harford County, MD (it's too far to commute from Delaware or Pennsylvania; 42 miles one way from Newark, Delaware, and I think I should live near my coworkers as all my college friends are scattering).

I'm from the opposite side of MD (family home is in Calvert County), so I dont know of any shooting ranges, gun stores, THR gatherings or the like in the vicinity. Could anyone give me a few hints/tips for the area?

I'm mainly looking for a place around where Route 24 and I95 meet, if that helps.

The good news is that it isn't Mongomery or PG counties. The bad news is that it's still MD and kinda close to Baltimore, but at least it's close to the Bay. Northerm MD is more like Southern MD (i.e. conservative) than suburban DC or Baltimore, and I'm sure you'll find a gun club/ranges, etc up there, it IS hunting country. (FWIW, I grew up in Bethesda, been sailing out of Solomons since `78 & have spent a bit of time running around 'the Free State")

You're correct in that you should live near teh job/co-workers. You need to build a network and professional contacts to further your careeer. Your college buddies may be fun to hang with, but they aren't much help at this stage in your life, unfortunately, that stuff is almost behind you now. (FWIW, I still get together with the guys I lived with (& wives/SOs) about once a year, and a weekend of remenissing & yahooing in the old style is about all any of us can survive - I graduated in `70 - but it's great fun).

All in all, at this point in your life, if you like the job/company, go for it, build your resume, get some $$$ in the bank, and figure out your next step. Life is your oyster. Good luck

Ranges here in Mont. Co. are all club-owned and operated, and carry hefty price tags. Not sure what it's like there....but it's $$$ to go shootin' around here.

You'll be right up I-95 from me. I'm just off the White Marsh exit.

There is the GunPowder Indoor Pistol range just past the Bel Air bypass. I personally haven't shot there though. If you come across Mountain Road to Paper Mill you'll be in Cockeysville/Hunt Vally, there is Continental Arms indoor pistol range just off of Padonia Road.

There are a few gun shops in that area, right off of RT 1 (at the 152 & 1 intersection) is Falston Gun and pawn. They have pretty good prices. (They are the shop that had the shooting a couple years ago.)

Best of luck to ya!

If I can help in any way let me know

Pendentive, have you looked at the Izaak Walton league facilities in Montgomery County? There are at least three. Gaithersburg, Damascus and Potomac are the ones I know of.

I belong to the Damasus Chapter. It is $100 a year to join. The facilities are beautiful set on 98 acres. Rifle, pistol, skeet, etc. ranges. Big Chapter house with quite a few activities.

I think they have some membership activity requirements if you join. Not sure what they are.

Dude! Come to scenic Fawn Grove, PA!

It takes 30 minutes to get to the I-95/MD 24 interchange.

Lower housing costs, taxes, and much better gun laws!

2 gun clubs within 10 minutes, 65-75 minutes door to door to BWI. Gunshows ( York, Harrisburg, Lebanon, Valley forge) where you can buy a gun and walk out with it....

Peace and quiet without all those damn MD drivers (don't even start - you know who you are!) Rocks state park a stone's throw away. The mighty Susquehanna in 15 minutes.....

Did I mention better gun laws?

Gander Mountain in 30 minutes CABELA'S!!!!!!!!! in about 90!!!!!!!!!!

Where exactly are you gonna be working?

Edgewood Arsenal would be the job location.

Living in Maryland is only temporary, I'll move to PA once I'm ready to settle down, if I dont get sent to grad-school full time within the next 3-4 years (I want to get my PhD, which is strongly encouraged with the group I've been talking to).

I considered small-town PA quite strongly, but I came to the decision it'd be better to live near my teammates/work, for social (Baltimore's a lot more my scene than small-town PA, as I'm a typical college kid (except for that whole 'owning a whole crapload of guns' thing :D )), team-building (After-work activites were mentioned as quite common, especially among their large number of 0-to-2-years-out-of-college kids) and ease-of-commute (since I dont know anyone to establish a carpool with).

Kharn, I've lived in Harford for the last 15 years. It's a beautiful place, but only if you stay away from the 24/95 area, especially Edgewood. Abingdon's okay, as is Bel Air. Basically, the farther north you go, the better off you are.

Gunshops are few and far between. Fallston Gun and Pawn is probably the biggest in the area. They have a nice selection of hunting and black rifles, but some of the sales guys there can be very opinionated or even downright rude.

There's only one indoor range that I know of. That's the Gunpowder Range on Rt. 543. It's pretty nasty, but relatively safe. The closest outdoor ranges are in Cecil County (forget the name right now, but it's a state park) and the Delta Gun Club in Delta, Pa. I belong to this club and though small, it's a nice friendly place to shoot.

Feel free to email me if you need any additional information.

Like JeepDriver said, the Gunpowder Indoor Pistol Range is pretty convenient to most parts of the county. I shoot there once in a while, though I haven't been there lately (just too busy). It's an ok facility... could use a bit of sprucing up, but the rates are reasonable and no membership is required.

As for gun shops, don't know of any "conventional" stores I can recommend, but you gotta get in touch with Vincent at Gideon Gun Sales in Bel Air (www.gideongunsales.com). He works out of his home, can get you anything that's legal in MD at a great price, and does transfers cheaper than anyone I know. Plus he's just a great guy. Tell him Dale sent ya.

Seriously dude, check out southern PA before you decide where to move. I currently live in northern Baltimore County and commute to Belcamp (one exit down 95 from Aberdeen). Takes me about an hour. Within the month I'm moving to a new place in southern York County. It'll add 10 minutes to my commute... but at least I'll be living in the United States. There are plenty of options and you're not far from the border. Think about it.

phd in what? didn't edgewood do a lot of research on psychotropic weapons back in the 60's? what do they do these days?

My bachelors will be in Chemical Engineering, dont know what I'd do the PhD on yet.

Their info packet focuses on work done in the area of chemical/biological protection over the past 90 years. I think it would be best if I didnt say anything beyond that.

moa - yes. that was the first one I looked at. Been trying to see if there's anybody around who I might go with under their "buddy pass", IIRC, and check it out first. Do they rent?

Bringing this one back from the dead, but for good reason:
I got the job!

I've been told to look around White Marsh (the White Springs complex, a little further away than Bel Air or Abington, ~25 minutes according to the other recent hire that lives there but very nice and located very near the mall other stuff post-college kids need), Abington (Woodsdale complex) and Bel Air (Country Village and The Seasons complexes); one of the other new hires seems interested in being roommates (he's currently commuting over an hour and lives at home with Mom & Dad).

Is White Marsh close enough to Marriotsville for an easy drive? Are there any gunstores in the area? From the looks of things, I've been "spoiled" by a DNR range ~45 minutes from my parents' place. :(
