My wife wants a 1911. She has decided to go with a single stack 9mm for the reduced recoil. She wants either a full size or commander length version.

I would appreciate some suggestions for well made 1911s that fit the aforementioned criteria. My budget is going to have to be under $800.00

Thank you

These folks have about the best prices around. Though it seems like they sell out it would appear that restock pretty quick.

I have the RIA .45acp tactical. The tactical models have upgrades that make sense and the cost is in line. I would recommend them. I've had my .45 for three years. There were some teething problems at first but they were easily remedied and the pistol has been pretty much flawless for a long time. I'd like to have the 9mm model, but my CZ75b is so good it's hard to make the case:)

ps... plan on replacing the grips, those wood grips look nice, but I found them too slick to hold on to. I got these Pachmeyer's. Sweet. ($26).

The tactical model seems to be the high end model for the 9mm. In the .45 they make a competition model to tho I don't think they have one in 9mm. I also think they have a double stack 9mm which Is a little harder to find so they might have more 9mm options if you really look around.

For under $800 I would get an STI Spartan, but for just under $1000 the STI Trojan with it's ramped barrel may be a better choice to shoot 9mm. I have an old Colt MK IV series 70 9mm, it shoots OK but my STI shoots circles around it. I would save up a little and get the Trojan. I have used the Stock guide rod and spring, used it with Wilson Combat shock buffers (they work), but have replaced them for the STI Recoilmaster, made great even better.

I owned a SA 1991 Target in 9mm which was very reliable but would not group better than 4 iches at 50 ft., after two trips to the factory. Ifinally sold it and purchased a Dan Wesson PM-9 which is equally reliable but provides nice tight 10 shot one inch groups at 50 ft. A fellow shooter has an STI Trojan in 9mm and has been happy with it's performance. I have had nosedives with my STI Trojan in 40 S&W.

What kind of "teething" problems?

Usually if you have problems its a few failures to go fully in to battery in the first couple of hundred rounds, generally goes away with a bit more use.

How nice to you want to be to her? You can get a nice alloy framed bobtail Commander that's nice and tight and has cool grips like this.

Not really a huge Kimber fan. Nothing wrong with them. I just think there are better guns for the money nowadays.

Well that is a nice pistol, at a nice price. I'll think you'll enjoy it.

I use Metalform magazines, and like them a lot. Frankly, either 9mm or 38 Super will work in that gun. You don't need 9mm-only mags.
