9mm is making more sense in revolvers these days

I'd like to see somebody make a 9mm revolver that had a cylinder sized for the round, rather than for a .38, and increase the barrel length by the same amount as the reduced cylinder length.

I agree 100%.
I would definitely consider a 9mm revolver if it was properly sized to the cartridge…Frame and cylinder properly sized. Not a .357 magnum length cylinder with a .357 magnum sized cylinder opening in a long frame.
S&W’s answer in the 986 looks weird. Long cylinder opening with the barrel and ejector rod extension into the frame window to accommodate a shorter cylinder looks odd.

I must admit though, that it’s growing on me. The price isn’t.

When a gun company's production lines are all set up to make frames that fit 357 or 38 spl cylinders, it is going to cost more to create a new part, a frame with a smaller frame window. The cylinder on my Alfa Proj 9231 is 1.4375" long, the cylinder on my S&W 929 is 1.46875" long. the cylinder on my Charter Arms 9mm PITBULL is 1.625" long.

* I just used a tape measure and eyeballed it, I didn't use a caliper. I've seen the cylinder length for the 929 listed as 1.488"

According to the SAAMI print, the rifling diameter for 9mm Luger is .355", with a tolerance of +.004".

When S&W first introduced the 929, the bore diameter was a little on the large size, they narrowed the bore at some point so new models have a slightly smaller bore now than the originals.

Call me old fashioned, but 9mm belongs in a pistol, 38 and 357 belong in revolvers. No good reason for shooting 9mm in a revolver. If ammo cost is a problem, buy a 22 revolver to practice with.

No thanks on a revolver shooting 9mm, I'll keep on carrying and shooting my G19 :)

I would be. With all of the light weight/small package 9mm semiautos out there, they will have quite an uphill battle.

Even more so when they are just a 38/357 revolver with the same length cylinder, just chambered for the shorter round. Get to carry the additional weight without the reward.

This is it exactly. The plethora of small 9mm autos out there already fill this niche for anyone who is sensitive to ammo prices and wants a CCW gun. And if it's just a CCW gun that someone wants, then you're competing with all the .380's out there too.

As a fun gun, sure it has appeal, but that is a small market.

If revolver companies want to sell 9mm revolvers then perhaps they need to build a 9mm gun, not a .357 magnum gun with a .357 magnum cylinder cut to 9mm chambers.

Edit: I wish to clarify. Before I mentioned the 986 and how the cylinder doesn’t fit the frame, but the barrel is mated up to the cylinder. This isn’t the best outcome but it sure as heck beats a 9 mm bullet having to travel the remaining length of a magnum cylinder before it hits the bore of the barrel.
If a company wants to provide a convertible that’s one thing and it’s fine for what it is, but if a company wants to call a revolver a dedicated 9mm then accommodate the cartridge with a proper cylinder with a proper B to C gap, not a half inch of free bore.

Went to Collector's Firearms today...they had none.
I'm sorry to hear that.

I do not know how many S&W Model 986's were produced but if the number is low, they may have become "unobtainium" on the usual used gun sources.

Best I can say is to keep looking. I for one, will not let either of my M986's go although I might swap my 2-1/2 version barreled model even for a 4" K-32 S&W revolver,

I haven't run across an affordable K or L framed 9mm revolver lately.

The SA 9mm Italian SAA clones are getting more common, though, and cost about half the price. I will probably get a 4.75" one to scratch my itch.

o_Oo_O

Sportsman’s Warehouse has S&W 986’s for $1219.00

I guess my thinking is so “two years ago” o_O but $1200 just seems too high.
