Man, that's tough. "All around" tells me it needs to be available in CCW size guns and the 9 has that covered. I don't carry big, heavy guns like 1911s or EEA Witnesses much. I have a Ruger P90, but it mostly sits in a case while either my .38 snub or my pocket 9, a Kel Tec P11, does day to day pocket duty. Now, outdoors, hunting, the 10 is the answer to the question if you like autos and I don't, not much, for outdoor use. I prefer my Blackhawks and my Contender.

So, I voted 9mm, but all us revolver guys know this poll is a complete joke. Neither competes with the .38/.357 for "all around". :neener:

Wow,

This is compairing apples to oranges. 10mm is the better deffence/hunting round if you can handle the recoil, 9mm is much more economical to shoot. nuff said.

10mm wins hands down!! Whether you reload or not (and I do) there are many commercial loadings available for this caliber ranging from 135grn up to 200grn. I have two Smiths a 1006 and a 1076 and firing any load from these guns is no worse than a 9mm as these heavy suckers just soak up the recoil. I have been a 1911 man for over thirty years and just recently switched to the 10mm as where I live there have been quite a few sightings of cougars/Mountain lions and I just can't depend on the 45 to make a clean kill, with the 10mm, no worry!! Load up either with Double Tap and either 2 legged or 4, I feel good to go!

I thought it was just that the average FBI agent couldn't handle the recoil of a full-power 10mm, which is why they starting under-loading them.... and then S&W realized that there was no need for the extra case space one day and came up with the .40SW based on the loadings of the 10mm used by the FBI...

or am I wrong?

Isn't this like asking "What's better, a Honda Civic or a BMW sports sedan?"

The 10mm is way more powerful, but ammo is way more expensive.

I voted 10mm. I reload, and I carry a G29.

Ask yourself this question:

If you had a bad guy charging at you and had a 9mm and a 10mm on the table in front of you, and could only pick one, which would it be?

9mm -- in +P defensive load format, plenty lethal for humans (or, probably more proper to say it does not suck any more or less than every other pistol cartridge out there, since none get the job done very reliably), and quicker back on target for follow up shots.

That's pretty much my definition of ideal in a defensive handgun -- adequate penetration/power to kill someone if I do my job and put the bullets somewhere important, and as absolutely little recoil as possible so I can follow up with additional rounds to ensure the job gets done. I wouldn't go lighter than 9mm (and like 45 ACP) but don't see the point for 10mm if the concern is two legged predators.

While they truly are in different leagues, the 10mm is far more versatile. It is suitable for anything from match shooting to personal defense to medium game hunting. With the ability to go from the low end loads that are similar in kinetic energy to a 9x19, all the way to top level loads that nip at the heels of the .41 magnum, and the ability to use bullets from 135 to 220 grains, it is about as flexible as an autolading pistol cartridge can possibly be.

That said, for deep concealment, 10mm pistols just don't get that small. The Kahr PM9/K-T PF9 are much smaller and roughly 1/3 the weight of the only compact 10mm's; the Tanfoglio Witness Compact and the Glock 29.

The 10mm is definately the more capable cartridge but it's a commercial midget next to the 9mm and other popular service rounds, so picked the ubiquitous "euro pellet" over what's basically a semi wildcat.
