I think that 9MM is a wonderful round, inexpensive ($4.00 for 50 at Academy Sports), soft-recoiling, and efficient for its size. With the Astra A-100 , the Ruger 89 or 95, you can get Mec-Gar 17 round mags. That is a lot of firepower. I have come to the .40 round fairly late, but today i carried an Astra A-100 .40. It has a 13 round mag and is heavy but accurate. The .40 round is 50% heavier than the 9MM and probably a better round for self-defense. .22LR ammo is virtually free, riiculously cheap. So it is a cheap round to use for lots of practice and fun. I have .22 revolvers and one cheap .22 auto. You decide.
Given your choices and how it will be used, I say the 9mm. The ammo is cheaper and the cartridge is generally more accurate over a broader range of bullet weights.
