Most of the scopes I'd like to put on top of my .308 cost two to three times this much, but I wonder if it's possible to spend $500 and get a quality scope for shooting at medium range.

This is one possibility. I have no experience with their scopes, though. This is another.

I like mil-dot reticles but they're not a requirement. Any suggestions?

Out of those two links...the Vortex Viper wins...their customer service is awesome and the warranty is a lifetime that you can transfer as well.

I have the Viper with target dot that I am selling...not because I dislike it, but I am upgrading optics.

Vortex offers good glass at inexpensive prices.

I would also recommend the Viper that aubie mentioned. I also have the target dot and it's a great scope for the money. Mine is mounted on a .223. Too bad you weren't in the market a few months ago they used to be going for around $250 but now are back up around $400 I believe

I have a nikon buckmasters 6-18x40 mildot on my 308.
Midwayusa sells them for $369 and sometimes they are on sale for $299.

It's been a great scope, has a side focus, lifetime warranty and fast focus eye piece. I have no plans of replacing it unless I win the lottery!

I've been using the Nikon Buckmaster with mildot reticle, 6x18 with side focus scope on my Remington 700 SPS .308. I've shot from 100 to 600 yds with good results. The scope is about $300 plus a set of good mounts/rings.

Are you going to use it for tactical purposes, or just for hunting?

If you are never going to use the rifle for tactical purposes, then there's no need to spend the extra money to get a tactical scope. Tactical scopes usually command a premium price.

For a standard scope, the Vortex Viper is hard to beat. Their glass is exceptional, and the scopes are durable and backed by a lifetime warranty. However, look into the new Viper HS scopes. They're new to the market and use a 30mm tube and even better glass. I believe it's the same glass used in the PSTs, which are on par with Leupold Mark4 glass.

LibertyOptics.com sells Vortex heavily, and they can get you any model you want. Give Scott Berish a call.

The MSRP is higher than what they cost. You can get a 4-16x for under $500.

No hunting--just targets and keeping the king of England out of my dining room. :)

I went with a Vortex. We shall see....

Check out the Vortex 6.5-20x44 scope. I have one on my SCAR 17S and have found it to be a very solid performer. Vortex is one of those up and coming optic manufacturers. I have several of their products now (SPARC, StrikeFire, and the scope mentioned above) and have found them to be extremely good products at a very reasonable price point.

EDIT: I see you went with the Vortex, I think you'll like it.
