ABC Shows Machine Guns for AWB

Seems like not a single person in the mainstream media has any knowledge of firearms. The reporters always call semi-auto rifles "automatic rifles", they show pictures as described of full-autos, etc, etc... Just this morning on KABC radio the commentator was saying how "these kinds of rifles aren't any good for hunting or target shooting". Well I beg to differ. An accurate AR-15 is a great gun for coyote or other varmint control. And anyone who's ever shot my ARs at a paper target doesn't want to stop, because they're hitting the target!!

The only thing hunting and target shooting have to do with freedom is that they're good practice.

The Chief of Police on the Nightline segment said the banned guns could fire 30 rounds in 5 seconds and warned we would see "the carnage begin" after the ban ends. Get a (pistol) grip, Chief!

Yep, and a revolver can fire 6 rounds in a blink of an eye, IF Jerry Miculeck is shooting it maybe. I'd like to see the chief bang off 30 in 5 seconds. The whole intro full of full-auto scenes was just outrageous!

My Uncle is #3 in charge of the Cincinnati ABC affiliate. I wonder if there's anything he could do.

Yes, your uncle, and all ABC affiliates, can demand that ABC news run a retraction on the air.

The stations can simply say that they know this report to be not only false, but fraudulent, and because it ran on the affilates, that affects them. They can call and demand an on-air correction.

Now, whether ABC will do it is another matter, of course, but it's still worthwhile to let ABC know that everyone knows they faked a story.

Write/call them and make it clear you have options in which news you watch and that ABC isn't on your list. "Follow the money" - get in touch with their sponsors too - I don't watch ABC but it's probably the same bunch of drug/car/consumer crap ads every night that fund their "reporting". Let the sponsors know you've stopped watching ABC news because of inaccurate and misleading reporting.

What amazes me is that politicians and the media keep using language like "back on the street".

There are currently 30 million "assault weapons" in the US--most in the safes of law abidding gun owners.

I saw Feinstein on a news program talking about a 7 million dollar shipment of AK-47s intercepted coming out of Romania, en route to a SC gun dealer. AK shipments have been coming regularly for 10+ years!

I must admit that I'm nowhere near as educated about different firearms as you folks. However, I was watching KING 5 news (a local NBC affiliate) here in the Seattle area as they were doing a story on the end of the AWB. At one point during the story the correspondant was talking about these "high powered rifles" being back on the street while several truly high powered bolt action hunting rifles were hanging in plain view on the back wall. It was obvious that the interviews with the local gunstore owners were edited for specific responses as well. They even had the police chief whining about these "deadly weapons" being back on the streets and that the carnage would begin. *sigh* At the end of the story they talked about the Democrats urging the President to reconsider the AWB but that he left it in the hands of the Republican Congress.

So after painting a picture of violence erupting in the streets with automatic gunfire they say Republicans are to blame. Nice.

I'll stick my neck out here.

I work for an ABC affiliate. Dianne Sawyer of good morning america made some good points about the AWB being bogus. Other than that i agree that coverage was sad.

If we wanted to send a letter, petition or somthing to ABC maybe i could get the info of were and who to send it too if anyone is interested lemme know.

Heres the link to our stations web site www.wdio.com just for kicks.

I just sent them a letter

This is what I wrote, lets see if they reply or respond

Your recent broadcast on the upcoming Assault Weapons Ban expiration was full of lies and inaccuracies that I would not have expected from your network. Your show showed clips from the North Hollywood bank robbery. It showed the criminals using fully automatic weapons. The Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) does not have anything to do with fully automatic weapons. The AWB has to do with cosmetic feature not being allowed on military style Semi Automatic Rifles.
The AWB prohibits the following features:
1) a folding or telescopic stock,
2) a Pistol grip protruding conspicuously beneath the stock,
3) a bayonet mount,
4) a flash suppressor or threaded barrel,
5) an attached grenade launcher
My question to you is this. When was the last time you heard of a Criminal holding up a store with a bayonet equipped rifle or a drive-by bayoneting, or when was the last time two rival gangs started shooting grenades at each other. The AWB has done NOTHING to reduce Crime.
Let’s face the facts. Criminals can not legally purchase firearms. If they did, they would not be criminals. The playing of the North Hollywood bank robbery footage has no bearing on the AWB. Those criminals had already broken the law prior to committing the robbery by illegally converting a Semi-Automatic Rifle into a Fully Automatic weapon. They broke a law that was enacted in 1934 prohibiting the possession or manufacture of a fully automatic weapon without a license.
Many supporters of the AWB say that once the ban is lifted any criminal or mentally ill person will be able to get an assault rifle and the streets will become a war-zone. This is a blatant lie, as it is already illegal for criminals and the mentally ill to own or possess firearms of ANY type, to include a simple BB gun. The AWB only affects law abiding citizen’s ability to purchase rifles with these so called evil features.
Police Chief William Bratton is either confused or does not know what he was talking about. He stated that these Banned weapons could fire 30 rounds in 5 seconds. This is a blatant lie due to the fact that to shoot a Semi-Automatic Rifle, you have to pull the trigger each time for the rifle to fire. A Fully Automatic weapon has the capability of one pull of the trigger and 30 rounds would be fired. My credentials on knowing this bit of information do not come from what I have read or seen on ABC. I am a United States Marine, helping to defend this great nation. Being a Marine means we use and become familiar with the capabilities of the weapons in the US arsenal. The only weapons that can fire 30 rounds in 5 seconds are the fully-automatic weapons, and as I have stated before are not allowed for civilian possession unless licensed. I have fired many fully automatic weapons during my Marine Corps career, and have fired many semi-automatic weapons. I was never able to fire 30 rounds with a semi-automatic weapon in 5 seconds.
In fact the article on your website has inaccuracies to it. To quote your website “It also means that the barrel of the gun can come equipped with a flash suppressor, which makes it more difficult to see the location of the shooter at night.†This is not what a flash suppressor does. A flash suppressor is designed to divert the light from the muzzle flash of a rifle fired at night from the shooters eyes. In my belief it enhances the flash when seen from the targets perspective. It does not make a shooter harder to see, it allows him to fire without being blinded by the flash of the muzzle.
Many supporters of the AWB love to use the term “Assault Rifleâ€. Do you know where or who came up with this term? That person was Adolf Hitler. He coined the phase by naming a automatic rifle that the Nazi’s were developing the “Sturmgewher-44†or when translated to english "Assault Rifle-44". This weapon had a fully automatic capability. It had a detachable 30 round magazine. Your show incorrectly labeled semi automatic rifles “Assault Rifles†because the look similar to actual “Assault Riflesâ€. This is like saying that all cars are Fords. They are similar. I can also use the comparison “NBC, ABC, CBS, they are similar.
I will not watch your show again unless you make a retraction or correction, and I will advise my friends and neighbors to do the same. Like I said before NBC is similar, I guess I will have to watch that channel instead. You have my permission to post this letter.

Here's the e-mail I just sent them.

(We're Listening)

"We're listening". For some reason, I don't really believe that. Here's my point and question. Last night, in your story about "assault weapons" and the uncoming sunset of the ban, you showed pictures of fully automatic machine guns and showed footage from the infamous Hollywood shootout (again, in which fully automatic machine guns were used). Q: Are you simply unaware that the "assault weapons" ban law has nothing to do with machine guns? Machine guns have been banned and severely restricted since 1934. So, based on any logical assessment, that puts you in the following position: 1) You are either amazingly uninformed about the very subject you did a major news program on or 2) You are purposely attempting to manipulate and deceive the public. So, my last question is: Which of the two is it? "We're listening". Prove it to me and send me a reply.

NOTE: I will be posting this letter on a number of web forums. I will also be posting your reply (or commenting on your lack thereof). I await a response from one of your representatives.

Same old, same old. Back in 1994, when the AWB was being discussed, Tom Brokaw on NBC news did a story about the proposed ban, and used film footage of A FULLY AUTOMATIC AK47 being fired. This provoked a number of letters to NBC, which responded with words to the effect that yes, it was incorrect, and no, they didn't intend to issue a correction.

And then, a couple of weeks later, THEY DID IT AGAIN! :cuss: :fire: :banghead:

Now we have ABC doing the same, and CBS going after Bush with forged documents . . .

There's only one word which describes the organized and orchestrated campaign of lies promulgated by the dominant Big 3 networks: malice. :cuss: :banghead: :fire:

Tom,

I remember the CBS trash piece "The Guns of Autumn". It portrayed hunters in a VERY bad light. Of course, to do that, they actually attempted to BRIBE hunters into committing crimes, like shooting waterfowl that had landed on the ground.

I also remember that CBS got LOTS of negative flack over that show, and I do not think it was ever re-broadcast. I seem to remember that CBS did offer some sort of apology, too--as half hearted as it was.

It was very much like when NBC was caught rigging the gas tanks of Chevy pickup trucks to blow up on impact, since they could not get them to do so spontaneously upon impact.

Sickening. I e-mailed ABC, for all the good it will do. When you have an agenda, calls for logic and truth largely go unheeded.

This evening on the ABC World News, Peter Jennings pointed out ABC had received a lot of mail regarding Wednesday's report, and that the automatic weapons shown here (Hollywood shootout) are not covered by the AWB, and will remain "illegal" - his word, not mine.

Yes, he also made the point that although fully automatic weapons like those were not covered by the ban, the 75 round mags they were using were indeed covered by the ban... So anyway, at least it's something....

On a positive note, there was an article on the Op/Ed page of today's 'Star' from an 'emeritus' professor of Sociology (!??!) in Evansville concisely describing how and why the whole 'assault weapons' hoopla is based on deliberate misinformation knowingly sown by the various media in pursuit of the sensational.

That would be Dr. William R. Tonso, who is a retired Professor of Sociology from the University of Evansville.
Smart man, and one who is committed to the Second Amendment.

BTW
'Emeritus' means one retired from professional life but permitted to retain as an honorary title the rank of the last office held .

Glocksman: I knew that emeritus meant that he was retired, but was kinda blown away by the notion that anyone with traditional American values could actually survive Academia long enough to earn the honorific. Especially in a 'fuzzy' subject like Sociology.

He must've felt a lot like Galileo with the Inquisition on his case most of the time. True Believers aren't very tolerant of a Heretic in their midst, especially when he's right.
