I bought a smith and Wesson 686 with a front red ramp on the sight.

I thought I should use it sighting normally, by which I mean the top of the ramp is even with the tops of the rear sights for a level across the horizon look.

Someone told me the bottom of the red ramp should be even with the tops of the rear sights so that the red ramp sits like a dot on top of the horizontal plane made by the rear sight tops.

Can this person be right or is this a case of someone who means well insisting but giving the wrong info?

The top of the actual steel front sight should be even with the top of the rear blade.

The S&W red ramp is an ingenious solution looking for a problem to cure.

It really isn't seen when you have a proper sight picture.

I hate `em. At this point in time, a 6" 29-3 is the only sixgun I own with an infernal red insert and eventually, a gunsmith will cut it off and replace it with a black post.

The only real point to the red ramp is to help speed up front sight aquisition when drawing and aiming, not to actually aline sight picture. Correct? That's all I've ever used it for. It works. Doesn't throw me off or anyhting.
