Accident on "Doomsday Prepers"

It's interesting to see peoples' views on why they are prepping, what they are ready for, and how they prep.

For instance, some preppers seem to be preparing for one event, but in reality they would be ahead of the game if any number of events occur (economic collapse, solar flares, war, chaos, etc.).

However, some of these bafoons are just that. For instance, one guy in LA is prepping for a major earthquake there. Hey moron, I've got news... if you REALLY think that you are in danger, then MOVE!!!

Another genius in NYC is prepping for a volcanic eruption that occurs every 700 million years. His preps don't include guns because you can't own then in NYC. WELL THEN GENIUS, MOVE SOMEPLACE WHERE YOU CAN OWN THEM. He also struggles with the limits on apartment size and overcrowding in the city. Again, I say, MOVE from NYC!!!!

To keep it gun related, it's amazing that Anyone with prepping in mind would fail to include guns and ammo in their preps... that's second only to water, food and shelter, and arguably guns are top on the list...

The couple that cleared their house as a team, she teaching other women how to shoot, cook, etc. But she is morbidly obese. No mention of her weight by the expert.

She's not 'morbidly obese', she's 'stocked up on a portable, high-density energy supply which also acts as thermal insulation and soft body armor'.

While that may very well be true the many americans watching the show are neither into guns nor being paranoid about the end of the world but will now associate the two. It also doesn't help that many people into guns are 'end of the worlders'. When middle of the road americans make this connection they stop taking the 2nd amendment arguements seriously after they hear them from the same people claiming to need guns for the "upcoming revolution".

Exactly. Shows like these attempt to marginalize gun owners by bunching us in with the paranoid wackos, like those who think a 2nd term of Obama is the end of civilization as we know it.

Reminds me of the "doomsday prepper" whose guns were taken away because of a statement he made to the doctor. Maybe if the guy had bothered to lose about 150 pounds of blubber he would not have needed to see the doctor for his chest pains.

I'd say most preppers have flaws. Some become expert on food, realize guns are necessary too, but never really learn how to handle them. Many are like me: I grew up around guns and consider them as natural to my life as underwear, but despite rural upbringing don't know anywhere near enough about growing food. I did do a couple of decades as an EMT, but I'm reminded many preppers get the Beans and Bullets part a lot better than the Bandaids part.

Yeah, the couple with tons of canned food, a welded together steel home, prepping for a great quake - but having much of the food in glass jars and no "fences" on the shelves like you'd see in a motorhome or boat - obviously have "blind spots" in their thought processes.

I'd say that any of the preppers who went on the TV show were either total idiots or they KNEW they were painting a bullseye on themselves, but decided it was more important to motivate others to prepare. Heck, if we stll had Civil Defense like we did in the early 60's, we'd be much better off. Whether we realized it or not, we were really preparing for an infrastructure failure, regardless of cause. It makes sense to be a good Scout and Be Prepared. I'd like to think that some of those on the TV show made that choice because they truly felt that the more who are prepared for hard times, the better.

On the other hand, some of them are a bit nuts. And I hate seeing gun owners portrayed in a bad light.

That is an excellent point. The funny thing, and its not just "end or world preppers", is that preventable disease is the number one threat to americans. People who store a decade of MREs, turn their home into fort knox, hides a gun under the toilet etc.; all while being over weight, sedentary or smoking cracks me up. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are a far bigger threat to one's life than crime will ever be. Anybody who preps for ninja attacks while ignoring his health is just a grown up playing fort.

The lame-stream media always pick a fool to make gun owners look like idiots, like the "keep my baby safe*" yokel the Democrats singled out during the previous set of Presidential debates. Take a look at how this guy plays right into Biden's hands. This prepper show is no different.

This show is just a reflection of how Americans think now, over the top.

When it comes to guns it’s G.I. Joe tac-cool, food it borders on hording.

Really most would be better served with the attitude of the self-sufficient Americans of the thirties, spending incredible amounts of money for stuff and gadgets won’t make you a successful survivalist.

I just watched the show. It didn't show what he shot himself with. He had quite a few different guns.

The guy really seemed like an idiot though and had a finger on the trigger when he shouldn't have in a few other scenes.

I've got to say though, when I watch a show like this, it's not hypothetical disasters that scare me. It's the people in them! What nuts.

The first thought I had when the guy had an accident was he might have been shooting with a two thumbs forward grip and the space between the cylinder and barrel got his thumb.

I've made it a priority for my house to have some provisions in the event we lost power (ice storm, tornado nearby, other power failure). I find this to actually be a responsible thing to do. Think of what you'd do without power for 3 days or more...in the heat of the summer or the middle of winter.

I grew up in Fort Lauderdale and this was standard practice for lots of residents in the 60s. Hurricane prediction was far less reliable than today and you had to be prepared if one hit because most power and comm lines were above ground. Add to that a very shallow water table and it's easy for utilities to be out for several days or more.

We went through Hurrican Cleo in 1964 - which was Category 1 by the time it hit our house, maybe even down to TS status. Power was knocked out for two or three days IIRC - and it was August. Somehow we lived without the AC for those few days.

We had bottled water in old milk jugs and we filled sinks and bathtubs before the storm hit. Plus we made the usual preparations of canned food, milk, bread, beer (for my dad). :) Again, all pretty normal for anyone living in Florida back then.

So did that make us "preppers"? Or just folks with common sense who lived in an area subject to the fickle and fatal whims of mother nature?

I agree that those that spend a lifetime prepping for the unlikely (colosal desaster) while allowing their health, finances, mental stability, etc go down the toilet have misguided outlook.

But many of these have healthy relationships with their spouses or family, which is something everyone can aspire to.

Again, leaving guns out of preps, like some of these do, is assinine.

I was thinking the same thing watching this show. Why worry so much about one specific thing when you should spend a bit more time worrying about heart disease, cancer etc? You know, the things that actually kill people.

And it is at that point that the preppers who become so over focussed in their preparations start losing track of reality and so their preparations become less realistic. Like Dr. Range and his wife Gloria. They are prepared for the coming earthquakes that will result from the magnetic switching of the earth's poles, but have a lot of their food canned in glass containers on open shelves. They are so focussed on prepping that they have completely not understood that their preparations won't support the crisis for which they are preparing. Idiocy.

Seems to be a lot of talk about "over focusing" to the degree that these folks are just about deemed mentally deficient. Never seen the show. Yea, I can kinda see how having your jarred fruitloops teetering in earthquakeland might be not such a good thing. Yadda.
And then there are the Kardashians etc etc and "their" millions of followers.
I'd rather be able to and have the wherewithal to change my motor oil than decide what lip gloss to apply to my lips.
