I'd go with a compact CZ. One of the new P01s if you can afford it, and an older CZ75 or 85 if you can't. The only disadvantage is that the slide is hard to grab compared to other guns.
9mm costs half as much to practice with, and is effective if the right ammo is used. (hollow point)
A month ago, I wouldn't have considered Bersa. But I bought a used Thunder 380 off of a friend, and I really like it. It is small without being too small, and has great ergonomics. It is reliable & accurate. Based on that, the Bersa 9 is worth considering.
