what is a good place to get orange bakelite AK mags at a decent price? the old school ones... not the new pmag ones...

also, I have a golani with a 50 round mag... and they are getting tough to find... anyone know where to get one of these at a decent price? thanks, Johnny

Orange "Bakelite" (actually polyethylene) magazines are really pricey nowadays. There really isn't a decent price for them.. I see them for as much as $60 apiece around the internet from googling. I'd rather pay less than half that for circle 10s or plum Izhevsk mags, but I understand the want for the orange ones. I'd love to have a couple but can't justify spending that much for them. Plus, plum mags match my furniture.

Edit: I was talking about -74 mags, -47 mags are a bit cheaper than $60. Still not cheap though.

Follow the equipment exchange on arfcom and the marketplace on akfiles. I scored a "bakelite" for around $40 on arfcom...

You are looking for a 7.62x39 version, I assume?

I have one I could let go for about $40. However, it displays the same defect that makes them rather rare: one of the feed lips is cracked.

Destructo6... thanks for the offer... I found a 45 rounder I'm about to throw $100 into... but, I'm still looking for Golani 50 rounders

I'll look around,

I'm surprised to see that they cost that much. I guess I really lucked out by buying 4 Bakelites for just $20.
Wow, now that I shopped around, I'm scared of those prices!

I get it if you are SET on 50 rounders for the Galil but CDNN has IMI steel 35 rd mags for $20, and I'm not sure I have ever seen them that cheap.

Not at all.

Then what magazines were made out of Bakelite? Could you show me? I can't find any references showing that the East German mags are poly resin. How do you know what they are made of?

man, the Golani 50 rounders are HARD to find

Even harder to find ones that actually work! The Galil mags may look like AK mags but they are nowhere near as rugged.

I've had very good luck with the Tapco Galil mags in my converted .Saiga .223 -- better than most of the (ab)used surplus steel mags available. Beware of refinished mags, unless they also replaced the springs odds are it will look better than it works :(

Then what magazines were made out of Bakelite?

I think the orangish polymer magazines were called "bakelite" because of a translation error when few were in western hands, and it seems to have unfortunately stuck through the fall of the evil empire when they were cheap surplus (I paid $7 each for my 5.45 mags).
