The top one works pretty well as a flash suppressor. It's similar to a heavy-duty (steel) A1 flash suppressor for an AR. It has 3 notches spaced around the back for the locking pin to keep it from rotating off. I've ordered from this place before; definitely recommended.
The A1 reference is that the slots are spaced all around so no muzzle-brake effect.
I put one on my SAR1 and did some tests with a few types of ammo. Most didn't flash that much even with no suppressor. The one exception was an older russian softpoint load that created a very impressive muzzleflash. With the flash suppressor (the one in the link), there was almost no flash with any load including the russian JSP load. It works pretty well and the guy behind midwest armory is good to deal with also.
