I'd like to mount a scope on an AK, but I'm not sure which is best in combination with the polymer side-folding stock shown below.

If I use the correct side-rail mount, can I be fairly certain that the stock is not going to fold shut correctly?

I have seen people drill and tap the receiver cover for a rail, which doesn't look bad, so long as it's not a big high rail like those Leapers are.

Then the other option I found is the B-Square mount. However, I don't think that mount will clear with the factory side-rails on the receiver.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Take off the rear sight and scout-scope it.

I really don't like scopes mounted on the receiver cover, you have to check the zero after every cleaning, and you really should clean after every range trip. There's just too much uncertainty there for me.

The Russian scope rails on the side of the receiver are designed so the side folding stocks fold over them (both skeleton triangle and poly solid).

What kind of groups are you getting with a scope mounted on any of those side-rail gizmos?

Are those groups appreciably better than what you get with iron sights?

Please don't tell me about the three-shot "cloverleaf" you shot just one time.
I mean, what can you do consistently?

The side-mount optics hold their zero quite well - better than I imagined. I generally stand when I shoot my WASR and shoot 50-100 yards unmagnified. I've never had any problems. I use a PK-AS.

Not sure at longer ranges.

I can do 2 MOA with my Saiga with a siderail mounted scope on it. I can't do nearly so well with the iron sights.

The side rail mounts on the AKs are primarily designed for dot-reflex sights, not long range glass optics.

Yeah, that is my understanding too.

I don't really know of an easy scope arrangement on an AK that will give anything but heartache when you break out the tape measure to record group sizes. You might see the target better through glass. I have real doubts that your ability to hit small targets at distance is going to improve over the iron sights.

A dot-sight at close range will of course allow you to get on a moving target faster. The donut of death is still the donut of death at 25 yards, even if the point of impact wavers 5 MOA from shot to shot.

So you guys really don't think the scope is worth it huh? I was wondering the same thing to myself; I wasn't really sure what style of sight to put on it.

I was thinking a 4x scope couldn't hurt, but I have an Aimpoint with a throw-lever mount for picatinny base. So that would limit the suggested weaver mount above, which looks like a nice base. If there is a proven setup for an AK scope I would love to hear about it.

20 rounds into 3" at 100 yards with no flyers with a vepr 7.62x39 and a PKAS on a side rail. And it holds it zero being taken off and replaced.
