Has anyone thought about setting up an ammunition cooperative? Sort of a local group-buy organization for ammo.

While online ammo prices are definately better than in-store prices in most cases, if someone wants to buy lots of ammo for training or just squirreling away, would it not pay to order directly from a distributor?

Legally, I believe the 1986 gun owner protection act (right!) removed any federal controls on the sale and shipment of ammunition. (Except perhaps requiring ground transport)

I would like to set up some kind of local buyers club, limited to a small geographical area so we would't have to re-ship anything.

Does anyone see anything wrong with this idea? or have any suggestions?

Depending on the size of the group, would a 10,000 round minimum group order size be too small, too large?

Would someone need to be a FFL in order to get an ammo distributor to sell to them?

-Thanks for any advice.

P.S. Assume the location for this group would be in Texas, not New York City. (nyc has a 200 cartridge storage maximum unless you have a Fire Department Permit)

I see guys on gun boards doing group buys for lots of things, including ammo. Last one I know of was some posters from the FAL Files ordering a bunch of .308 from Dan's Sporting Goods. A good idea.

Keep in mind if you order 10K , you will end up with your name on a list some where more than likely .

I don't think an ammo buying co-op would ever be able to satisfy the federal requirements for non-profitness, but you might consider incorporating as a for-profit. you don't really need the corporation for any money handling purposes, just to act as a more official looking entity to 1) convince manufacturers to sell to you and 2) make things less convinent for The List Makers. an officer of the corporation could order on behalf of the corporation, but write a personal check to the ammo manufacturer.
