I too want to get a GP100 and am having a difficult time deciding on which one to get. I'm torn between the stainless full shroud 3" and the stainless full shroud 4" with adjustable sights. At this point my primary purpose would be for recreational shooting. I currently own the following .357's: a nickel S&W 4" 586, S&W 2 1/2" 66 and a S&W 640 Centennial. I am open to opinions as to which to get and would like to hear what others who have owned either one or both have to say. Thanks, Mike

If you are going to use if for a fun gun or maybe a hunting/camping type sidearm, I reccomend the 4" with adjustable sights.

If you think that you will ever want to carry it concealed, get the 3".

For target shooting, the longer barrel will give you a longer sight radius and the 1" difference won't make that much difference for concealed carry. I occasionally carry a 6" GP100 with no problems.

I have a blued 4" GP. Use it for rec/fun/HD/target, wish I could carry it more. Wolf springs and dry firing smooth the trigger. For 357 only, I find it superior than the Smith 686...less bite. The 686 is a great gun, don't get me wrong. I'm always looking out for a deal on a S&W 586 Performance Center.

Out of the box you probably would enjoy a S&W 686, but the Ruger is a brute.;)

I have the 3" and 4" versions and my opinion is to go with the 4" gun if you're going to use it for plinking at the range and not CCW.

Not that the 3" one isn't a great gun, but the slightly longer barrel and adjustable sights on the 4" make a noticable difference in how easy the gun is to shoot accurately.

Idealy you would get the 4" GP100 and a 2 3/4" Speed Six if you want a shorter more compact gun. :D

I would pick the 4 inch with adjustable sights. The adjustable sights will allow you to tailor the sights to your ammo and the four inch barrel balances very well.

On a contrary note: you already have a good short-barreled 357 carry gun in the 66. Go whole hog and get the 6", 'specially if you think you'll ever turn it against critters :).

I love how the short-shroud 6" GP100 points, personally.

Thanks for your responses. I was out looking yesterday and am leaning towards the 4" version. I love the feel of the 3" but agree that the 4" would make a better range/plinking gun.

1goodshot, I have a friend that has the 3" SP101 and I don't care for it although I like the 2 1/4" version quite a bit. At this time though I want a medium frame gun.

Jim, I looked at the 6" full shroud but didn't like the balance of it and since I'm not a hunter the extra length isn't necessary. If I were looking for a 6" .357 I think I would try and find a nice S&W 19.

MikeJ - If you don't care for the full-lugged 6" GP100, look around for a half-lugged 6" version. I have one and love it. It may not be as light and graceful as a Model 19 but it is pretty darned good IMO and very strong. For me the balance is far superior to the the full lugged. I think it looks better also. My favorite GP-100 is the half-lugged, fixed-sight 4 inch. I do like GPs in all configurations, though.
