Can someone tell me, other than the stock and the muzzle brake and Pic Rail scope mount, is there any real difference between the Tikka Tactical rifle and the Tikka Varmint rifle?

Nope. Except in price.

I went with a T3 stainless and added a custom muzzle brake that works better than the one on the Tactical model. Tossed a bipod on it. Eventually I'll have it recoated in some tactical ish color someday. Probably saved a few hundred bucks.

The T3 Tactical has a 20 inch barrel, the Varmint barrel is longer.
The Tactical has a parkerized finish (including the bolt and bolt handle), the Varmint is blued or stainless. All T3s except the tactical have in the white stainless bolts and handles.
The Tactical's stock has adjustable comb height, the Varmint's comb isn't adjustable.
The Tactical's stock has sling studs on the sides, the Varmint doesn't.

Around here the blued Varmint is ~$600 and the Tactical is ~1100.
If you consider the stock upgrade is probably worth an extra $50, sling studs $10, parkerized finish $150, scope rail $150, threaded barrel w/thread cap $75, shorten barrel $50. That's almost $500. So, if you really want those extra features then yeah, its worth the money to have them all to begin with.
If you ask me the great majority of us won't need those features, so the Varmint is usually the logical choice. Of course logical never meant anything to most of us when buying guns ;)

I DO like the stock on the tactical, but all the other features I don't need (of if I ever do I'll get as needed. Hell, if I add a suppresosr I'll probably want to get a 3-lug).

I just don't know if I can justify the extra costs for the Tactical.

the stock is nice, but the rest of it is so much "comando wannabe".... the short barrel is a downer for anything but close range (police sniper) work.

The varmint will give you better ballistics, likely shoot better do to the longer barrel (more efficient powder burn unless your handloading)... and will be easier to sell when you tire of it...

Contrary to what you'd think reading some of these boards, most guys don't want anything "tactical".... If you really "need" tactical.... uncle sam has some openings.... you can play real instead of make believe...

ROFL - good points there on the whole "Tactical" thing.

I think there is a Varmint in my future :)

Now I just have to find one for a decent price. :banghead:

My ueber-tactical rifle. I'm used to working with bipods instead of sandbags. I bought a used Tikka, had the barrel threaded, and had a buddy custom manufacturer a muzzle break. Still looks almost completely stock. I'm still shopping for a good scope. I want to go all out, so I have a cheap Bushnell on it at the second.

All and all, the rifle cost me slightly over $600. Around $350 for the rifle, and about $250 for the accessories. (Bipod, threading, muzzle break, few other things)

Keep an eye out for quality used rifles, be surprised what you can find.

Whillikers! I just found this exact thread on TFL. I'll cut-n-paste what appears to be better information than any found in this thread so far. :)

"Tikka's website gives complete specs, with pics, of all their rifles. Could be those guys running Tikka's website don't know what they're talking about, but they're claiming that the Tactical is available in both 20" and 24" barrels.
http://www.tikka.fi/
The Tactical is only available in three calibers."

I've found bad information on Tikka's website before, so maybe you guys know something they don't know.

I hate you, Revdisk

Nice set-up, GREAT price.

Na, you don't hate me, Greywolf.

If I showed ya photos of all the full auto weapons I fired (almost all the ammo paid for by the European militaries, no less), THEN you'd really hate me. Firing a minimum of 10k rounds per week is hard work, you know? And walking through piles of brass nearly a foot thick is really annoying!

Anyways, want me to take some photos of my muzzle break? I think it's much better than the one on the Tikka Tactical, but I'm biased. I really do recommend going with a T3 stainless and adding whatever accessories you really need. It worked for me, and the rifle is a lot more accurate than I am.
