I am looking into buying a Sniper/tactical rifle in .308 and I have been researchingg the Rem700police and the Savage 10FCP to try to make an informed decision and I completely forgot about the Mossberg Night Train II. Does anybody have experience w/ this rifle good or bad? I'm pretty sure it comes with a scope and bipod all for just under 1k. Do the extras included make for a rifle lacking quality because I'm a lil bit sceptical of a rifle that looks so good and comes w/ glass and legs. Also, what is the estimated service life of a typical bolt action rifle?

Stick to the the Savage or Remington. I actually am fond of the 700 police but I prefer Savages more. They also have a huge aftermarket which Mossberg doesn't have.

You could try it out and see if it works for you, but I recommend going with the proven Savage and Remington designs.

A really long time with minimal care and minimal abuse. Many bolt actions have low round counts. High round counts usually mean replace the barrel and shoot some more. Unless a bolt action is abused and not cared for it should be around for generation. My dad got a Rem 700 and it is on the 3rd generation of Whitetail kills.

Until your post I had never seen the 'Night Train'. It is getting trashed on the net. I think a lot of that is jumping on the band wagaon of trashing a product without any real knowledge of it. If you buy one and is turns out bad then what?

I didn't find a price on the 'NT'. The scope is probably not all that great. It may be a good starter package that will require upgrading later. Handling one might tell you something. I wouldn't let conjecture talk me out of one.

Other options are Weatherby Vaguard/Howa, Savage or Rem 700. As you already know the Savage and Rem have the popularity going for them. Marlin may be a consideration.

I got a used Rem 700 (I think it had never been fired) but was looking at new Savages. I got 2 stocks, 2 triggers, brass and dies, scoped rifle traded for an AR upper I had $500 into. I am a big fan of used (Pre-Owned). 1 of my triggers was a Jewell. Ignorance is bliss - I didn't know what a Jewell was til after I had one!!

I honestly don't have a preference and would not hesitate to get either a Savage or Rem. I have seen both shoot well with little work and handloads. I am a firm believer that the shooter/handloader is more of a factor than Rem vs Savage. Rifle fit would be a deciding factor. The stocks on the Savages are nice. I did like the advantage of the switching barrels on the Savage even though I might never utilize that feature.

I also have a Vanguard Sporter that is pretty impressive. I am setting up one for someone in .243 that is synthetic stock. The triggers are pretty good on them.

Thank you, I went to a gunshop yesterday and looked at the savage's and for some reason they just didn't ring out to me the way they did in the magezines and on the Net. I don't know why my sudden change of heart but I think I'm going for it with the Rem700. That happens sometimes, for months my heart was dead set on getting a Saiga .308 and as soon as the gunshop got one in I went down there to buy it and ended up walkin out with an M1A scout, Thanks to my wife...lol. She said I looked so.happy holding the scout that she felt bad when she saw me pass it back for the guy to put it back on the rack behind the counter.

I have some new advice after reading your last post.
"Never, ever go buy a gun without bringing your wife".

Sounds like she has good taste.

Whew! For a second there I thought you meant this rot gut stuff!!

Does your wife have a sister? :D

Nothing useful to add to your post since I have not fondled the NT yet.

Damn...yeah when you said Night Train II I had bad flashbacks to College and "Riding the Train" as any night with the Night Train was called. Best/Worst $2.49 spent in my life.

Yes, she will ride along on all my gunshop endeavors and yes she does have a sister who wasn't too happy when I got her husband(my brother in law) who is a pastor all excited about shooting and CCW. My mother in law hates guns also but I got lucky and ended up meeting the 'outlaw' of the family, my father in law had to give up all his guns at knot tyin time. But not me, my ol lady let's me talk to her about guns all the time and when she goes grocery shoppin at wally world, I rummage through the bags sometimes to find a couple boxes of ammunition. True love does exist. BTW someone should start a thread tributing our gun gals for their non-ignorance on the subject. Also, she is the favored granduagter of a man who worked at ruger for 35 yrs.
