I'm considering a DPMS 308 AR mostly for target shooting, but also for occasional whitetail hunting. My main concern is the 11.2 lbs weight.

Anyone have any experience with this or another similarly configured AR in 308 as a hunting rife?

If you are sitting on a stand with a rest it probably won't be a problem, except for getting tired while walking to the stand.

You could swap the heavy upper for an AP4 or custom upper.

ETA that other than the weight and length it is just another .308.

I see no trouble deer hunting with an AR in .308. Other than what you already mentioned, they can be darn heavy, work on those arm curls :) I seem to remember many an hour as a young Private holding an M-16 over my head while being yelled at by a Drill Sergeant hehehe

The only other is ammo choice, no sure how .308 AR rifles feed/cycle soft pointed hunting ammo but I guess you will have to just try it. Not feeling like doing the required search, are 10 round mags available? And for love of all things good, practice trigger discipline LOL. A bit of buck fever with an auto-loading 30 round rifle will produce lots of deer burger ;)

Thanks for those points, guys. I haven't decided yet. I was just about set to buy a Tikka Varmint in 308 when this idea popped into my head. I've got several months to think about it though.
