I went to a gun store the other day. I haven\'t owned a handgun before, but want to buy one for self-defense. I don\'t really think I\'m in danger right now, but it would be good to get one and a CWP just in case if something later were to happen because I\'ve known of people who that happened to. I handled a bunch of handguns at the store, and the Springfield Armory had a grip that I liked. One of the guys there said that his favorite that they sell is that gun (they had the 45 and 9 mm, but recommended the 9mm since I\'m a beginner). They also had some glocks and a Walther P99. The Springfield Armory XD looked and felt like a good gun. Does anyone know much about this type of pistol?

You can check out Sprinfield Armory website or there's an XD forum.

I suggest, since you've never own one, take a basic handgun course and try out an XD before you lay your money down.

Good luck with your search.

The XD is a great pistol, buy it. I've had my XD-40 for a couple of years now, fired 1500 rounds downrange, zero failures.:D For me, the ergonomics are great, its very accurate, and it tames recoil nicely. I'd buy another one without hesitation. They are great guns. Pro-mag also makes 32 round magazines for the XD, I have two 20 rounders for my XD-40 and they work great.:D

I’ve had the XD-9 sub compact for about 4 years now.
The only complaint is somewhat sharp recoil but that is expected in such a small gun.
Just got the XD in 45acp with a 5 inch barrel. Never thought I’d say this but I like it just as much if not more than the 1911. Not to mention 13 rounds of 45acp per clip.:)

You can do worse. Oh, yes, you can do way worse.

At Christmastime last year I traded two handguns straight up for an XD-40. No problems so far, and I think I came out ahead on the trade.

SA XD 40 Service model

Hello,

Like you I'm new to shooting. When I decided to get into it, I joined a gun club that had a rental program and I had the chance to shoot different guns. I ended up choosing the Springfield XD-40 Service model (4" barrel). There are many good guns, but I liked the XD-40 because it felt good in my hand. I also liked the grip safety (something the Glock doesn't have) as well as the loaded chamber indicator. You could easily spend twice what the XD costs and yet the XD is a very solid and reliable gun. I've shot around 500 rounds without a single failure.

Some of the best advice you'll read here is to rent different guns to get a feel for them before you buy one, but realistically you could buy the XD 9 and be very happy. If you intend to use it for concealed carry, you'll probably want to stay away from the 5" tactical model and go for the Service or Compact (3") model.

I was just at the range today shooting my XD and every time I use it I'm reminded of why I like this gun so much.

The XD9 was my first pistol also. I now have around 2500 rounds through it without a single failure of any sort. So yes, I highly recommend it.

I've put over 2000 rounds through my XD45 5" ranging from factory to really questionable reloads without a single FTF. It's easy to clean, it points well, it fits MY hand well. I just wish SA would sell the slide assembly separately so I could have a 4" and 5" slide to interchange, and I check, they do fit. It's a shooter.

The SA XD is a fine firearm. If you are comfortable holding it, buy it. I'd go with the 9mm over other calibers so you can spend more $ on practice ammo. The service model is a good size, but the subcompact includes one of the extended grip magazines so you kinda get 2 guns in one.

I love my XD-40. You may find the trigger a bit stiff at first, but it smoothes out nicely after a few hundred rounds. Everything else is joyous right out of the box. The magazines handle well, seat and eject nicely, field-stripping is easy to the point of being comical, and they're reliable to the point of boredom.

I went to one range where the XDs didn't like the range's reloads, but otherwise it's an incredibly trustworthy gun.

Like cz, I think for the money, this is one of the best buys out there. Origionally designed by a Serbian firm, I believe, and a few made it over here, in the 90's, Springfield knew a good thing when they saw it. Has some better design features going for it than the glock, is better and more reliable for a high cap than Taurus, and made to compete at their price point, it is also one of the few pistols, that will hold hicaps in .45 cal. Which even though i don't need one , at all, i really want this in 45, just so I can have a firearm with 15 rounds of 45 , at one time. This must be what God feels like, when he holds a gun in his hands.

I will have to second the opinion of other's, and say "do your homework,
before you buy any handgun"; then if you still decide that the XD is
for you, try and find a range that rents handguns then take one for a
test drive. I think you will be pleasantly surprised; at how well these
Springfield Armory XD pistols "point and shoot"~! FWIW, I don't own
but one polymer frame pistol; and its a 4" service model XD .45 ACP. ;)

My XD40 service is on my hip as I type this. I knew the first time I shot it that it was the gun for me. At the time I had a Glock 22 that I had been shooting competition with and doing really well, until I shot that xd. I originally planned to keep both but less than a month later the Glock went away in a trade. I've yet to have a dedicated Glock shooter shoot the xd and not proclaim it superior to the Glock in ergonomics, all other things being equal. I'd say buy one and don't look back. Lately I've been considering saving up for the 3" model. My only complaint is concealment, I feel the double stack grip frame wants to print more than a 1911. I think the right holster will fix that though.
