I've been brooding on this...

I'd like to have a .454, 220 Grain Pure Lead Hollow Base, widely Hollow-Point Bullet for .45 LC or .44 Cap and Ball.

I'd like to have a .358, 180 Grain, Pure Lead Hollow Base, widely Hollow-Point Bullet, for .38 Special.

I doubt anyone makes either Bullet, or Molds for casting one's own.

So...this has got me thinking to try making a couple simpler Molds first.

Anyone here made their own Molds?

During this calendar year I saw two homemade molds on ebay, one for 44 cal and one for shotgun slug. They sure looked rough, but appeared to be perfectly useful. Especially the slug mold, hollow point and hollow base if I recall correctly.

If you give it a try, oyeboten, we would surely appreciate your updates.

You can make your own mold but it would be a big job. There are also places that will custom make a mold to your specs and that might be a better solution than learning how to DIY. But either way, I don't think you can cast a hollow base and hollow point at the same time.

Unless the bullet was oriented horizontally in the mold, and the sprue would cut along the side of the bullet. It would need to be resized to make the cut sprue nice and smooth, but it might work.

Yes...Lol...if having a 'Hollow' on each end, I'd figured the Sprue to occur on one of the wider Lands...where, it'd be an easy cut-off.

Really, I'd be very interested in a Flat Base .454, 220 Grain wide-ish hollow 'Hollow point' for that matter...ditto with a .452 version (though probably it could be easily re-sized from a .454)

And, these would be easier Molds to make.

Yes, easy to make, but why not have a standard mold hollow pointed?

If you already are set up to cast bullets, you could just buy a mold about 10% heavier than the finished bullet would weigh, then have it hollow pointed. It should be a single cavity mold, but a double cav. can have one cavity HP'd while leaving the other stock.

There's a guy over on castboolits.com named buckshot that will do that for you. He's very good at it and reasonable.

Hi snuffy,

Hmmmmm...I'll look into it.

I plan to be reloading eventually! (Maybe early next year)...and, I'll be happy to Cast and Size my own Bullets.

Been brooding on how existing Molds could be modified...so, your mention makes sense.

I came across a website that allowed the user to design the bullet mould through a graphical interface that the company would create for you. I can't remember off hand.

There are custom mould makers, but they would be expensive unless you did a group buy. And even then, more expensive than a 20$ Lee mould.

I'm glad I asked about this...the more I see and brood on it, the more very good possibilities there turn out to be.

Thanks you guys..!
