I've got a Bushmaster AR-15 M4 variant. Shot A LOT of ammo recently. My wife conviscated my debit card when I went back to buy more ammo. I would like to know if there is a good, reliable, and relatively inexpensive .22LR converion kit or bolt assembly that I can use to help get proficeint with my AR. I am also concerned if the bolt type kits are harmful to the barrel. Or should I just fork out the money for a .22LR upper?

welcome to THR

the ceiner kits and clones (spikes, cmmg, etc) all work great, especially with black dog mags.

there are many pros and cons for the kit vs the dedicated upper. the topic has been discussed fairly exhaustively so a search would probably be educational

I did quite a bit of research on the conversion kits and settled on the Spike's Tactical. It had a couple of nice features the others lack. It has worked perfectly for me in my RRA. I'm a very happy customer.

The Spike's kit has a nickel-plated finish which is easier to clean and o-rings to seal the chamber; I think that puts it above the other options out there. I love mine.

i use a cmmg conversion kit, and black dog mags. it eats winchester value pack ammo no problem, remington ammo it doesn't like at all. those are the only types of ammo that i have tried. but so far i have about 1500rds through it and it is a nice piece of kit for sure and i highly recommend them.

you should just get the s&w mp-15/22lr so as to avoid getting your nice lower pooed up by cheap 22 plinking ammo

That is a good option, but the OP would probably never see his debit card again!

JUST came back from the range after testing my CMMG stainless.

I had winchester super X and CCI .

On my Bushmaster 16 inch barrel (1/9 twist ratio)the cci 40 grain @ 1260 (minimag) shot the best.

The worst, not even considering shooting anymore, was the 32 grain stuff.

I could get the minimags to touch each other @ 25 yards with the 4x scope, but it was really windy today so some went like an inch somewhere else.

Figuring out the ideal load for your rifle is the hard work, the rest is just fun!

Like a dummy i forgot to lube the conversion kit, but even without lube it never failed to extract and it fired all the ammo.

After the session with the .22 I fired three 5.56 rounds and I hit the gong @ 225 yards 3 times in a row, with the scope of course.

I did not re-sight the scope at all; just used the bulled - drop compensator and i had it set on 300 yards for shooting @ 25 yards.

Same platform, same trigger, 1/5th of the cost for the session.

I shot 300 rounds in total that would have costed me somewhere between 180 to 300 dollars depending on where you buy 5.56.
Next trip I will try some less expensive .22 on 40 grain.

Heavy and around 1100 1200 fps worked best for me.

By any chance you have the drum mags and if so how do they work?

I NEED them.

It's not *that* much more expensive than a dedicated .22 upper....in fact, I think the Spikes .22 uppers are actually more expensive than a complete M&P15-22. I have a 15-22 - it is a fantastic little rifle - reliable and accurate.

If I was the OP my choice would be between conversion kit (cheaper) and 15-22 - wouldn't bother considering a full upper.

I've the Black Dog 50 round drum. Its been perfect function in my dedicated Spike's Tactical upper. It seems to have just enough extra drag in my SIG 522 that the bolt doesn't fully close maybe 1 in 10. No feed failures in either gun.

I like it well enough I plan on getting another.

Just a heads up. CDNN has CMMG stainless conversion with 2 mags for 150.00 this weekend. I just ordered one. ( I am waiting on my first M4 to arrive at the gunshop)::D

I love my CMMG, and have never had a failure with it. A bonus is that the Black Dog mags also work with my SIG522.

22LR is the way to go. Even if they get gooey on the range you can clean on site using citrus based cleaner and a can of compresed air.
I shoot all sorts of nasty cheap 22LR ammo, I carry a can of 3-1 oil in a pocket and when the gun starts to stick I just shoot some oil in the action and do a rapid response to failure drill!
