AR 15 proper way to break in?

I think it is always a good idea to clean a new gun barrel before shooting it.

I bought a new Win Model 70 Sporter and the found the bore was loaded with a rouge like compound, evidently from bore lapping at the factory. I guess it must not have got cleaned or test fired. Only new gun out of the maybe 90-something that I have bought over the years that had something in the bore, but I am glad I checked.

I am of the clean, shoot, clean again at the end of the shooting session camp.

BTW, RRA advises the above.

Every barrel manufacturer recommends a thorough cleaning before shooting. I clean precision barrels using a bore guide and only from the chamber end. Do not pull the brush/patch back down the barrel.

I consider Noveske one of the best barrel makers in the country, you can't go wrong following Noveske's advise on break-in.

It is necessary to clean your barrel well using proper cleaning equipment prior to use of the barrel. We have not found any benefits when using an extended break-in procedure.

Do’s and Don'ts of Barrel Cleaning

Do:
Use a good coated rod
Use a bore guide
Clean from chamber end
Use a phosphorous bronze bristle brush
Follow recommended break-in procedures (listed above)

Do Not:
Do not pull the brush back through the crown
Use a stainless bore brush
Leave strong ammonia cleaning products in your bore for extended periods of time
Shoot your barrel hot enough to brand cattle!

In our experience, a loss of accuracy can be linked to a dirty or fouled barrel. Barrel life and accuracy is dependent on how the
barrel is used. The barrel may be damaged (shortened barrel life and/or accuracy degradation) from excessive heat caused by a
high rate of fire. We are not responsible for barrels damaged by operator abuse.

I've used a few of those Wilson air gauged barrels that RRA uses. They're actually pretty nice barrels. On the few that I've used, breakin (if you want to call it that) was minimal. I cleaned, shot and decoppered for a few rounds just to be sure, but the bores were pretty smooth from the get go on the ones that I've had.
