Are Olympic Arms AR-15 any good?

Alternately, you could go used.

I was in the same boat- I really wanted an AR-15 of some sort, but always balked at the price. Then the other week I saw a used Bushmaster in great shape in the gun shop, and got it for $589. The price was palatable, so I got my first AR that way.

I shopped around and got a stripped lower and parts kit. Cav Arms poly lower, black with an Armalite parts kit for about $200. Assembled that myself. Now I'm just waiting on Oly to build my 24" 243 WSSM upper so Atlantic Firearms can deliver it to me. It was $560 with shipping. So I'm getting a unique, portable, long range caliber semi-auto rifle for under $800 out the door. Not too bad. Less exotic uppers can be had cheaper.

I don't mind buying used. But what problem areas should I be looking for in used AR-15s?

I've got 3 AR's and one is an Oly, a K4B 20" A2 and the other 2 are built on Stag lowers (CMT), one has a J&T upper with an Oly telestock, bolt and bolt carrier and the other is all RRA with the exception of the Oly FIRSH floating handguards. I really like all 3, but the Oly 20" rifle is my favorite AR, and probably my favorite shooter rifle period. It's fit and finish is as good as the others, it's functions as well (all 3 are completly reliable with any ammo) and it's the most accurate of the 3, on any given day it will group under 1" with quality ammo.

I've heard all the stories about Oly, but if my rifle is an example of their current product line then I see no downside to owning an Oly. Very good product, lifetime warranty and great customer service. Oh, I paid $639 brand new in the hard case for the Oly A2.
