Back to the IMR powders again

I started out using IMR, but with Hodgdon now marketing it I feel they're going the way of the dodo bird. I can't see them marketing 2 brands of 4895, 4350, 4831 and 4227 forever. Same goes with Winchester's 231 (HP38) and 296 (H110).

4895 and 4064 is what I started loading .308 and .30/06 years ago. I've now moved to RL15 for the .308 but still use 4895 for my blaster .308 ammo. I've got so much loaded .30/06 I quit loading for it until I shoot up the 5K I loaded a decade ago.

I've gotten my B-I-L into reloading for his .25/06 and .270 rifles. He's using RL 22 with fantastic results in his .25/06, hasn't toyed with the .270 loads yet.

I grew up on IMR powder. Started out back in the day with 4831 and then went to 4350 in my 270 and 300 win mag. I had a 270 that would shoot 54 gr of 4350 and a 130 sierra flat base, and put them in a clover leaf hole, all day long. I have since used 3031, 4227, 4198 and 4064 in my reloadings. The new stuff that comes out, is Greek to me and I don't feel comfortable with it. I loaded some win748 and had good results but it was out of the norm for me. I just got a 7-30 Waters barrel for my Contender and want a good, speedy load, with 120 gr Noslers, using IMR powder. Haven't got one yet.

I do not see Hodgdon phasing out IMR powders as too many people still rely on them and they are undoubtedly profitable . I still use some IMR but have diversified into Alliant and Hodgdon too. You have many choices and you use what works. I've been thinking of trying the (slightly) lower priced brands and giving them a chance.

As with many folks, I started my high power loading with DuPont made IMR series propellants, and if that was all I could ever get, or be gotten, would consider myself well served. I have seen a lot of powders come and go, and I'm sure will see a lot more. Just as it is with many firearm, bullet, you name it companies, IMO propellant companies keep bringing out products that are a solution in need of an application not already well served and marketing hype.

Yep, I like the ease of loading ball propellants for certain applications, but there is something that just feels and shoots right with IMR propellants, and always has.

I have used IMR4064 for about 20 yrs now. It's all that I have ever used in my 270 win, 308 win, and 22-250 rem. I have even used it in my 223 ar15, however it was a major pain in the butt to get it all in the cases. I have since switched to Ramshot TAC in my 223, hard to beat as far as metering goes.

I was using mostly IMR powders but I have recently changed over to the Hodgdon equivalents because they generate less pressure and seem to be a little more accurate. I've been using only H4350 in my 30-06 rounds lately.
