I've never been a fan of open carry, although it has it's merits in certain situations, especially when it is done to mostly gain attention. However, this seems to be getting positive reviews which is good.

'Badass' female lawmaker open carries on Va. Senate floor: 'It empowers women'

By Jessica Chasmar - The Washington Times - Thursday, January 17, 2019

A female state lawmaker in Virginia openly carried a handgun on the Senate floor this week, calling it a deterrent against potential attackers.

State Sen. Amanda Chase, a first-term Republican who is seeking reelection this year, spoke on the Senate floor Tuesday with a .38-caliber revolver openly strapped to her hip, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

Like all politicians, she's playing to the peanut gallery. She must have figured that a visible pro-gun stance would play well with her constituents. I can tell you that in urban Northern Virginia, such a stunt would not play well, and would probably imperil her re-election. Politicians from here take antigun positions, because it garners them votes.

Any savy politican plays to the majority of the voters opinion on any matter.
Exactly, and that is why we have to concentrate on influencing the opinions of the grass roots, rather than the opinions of the politicians. If you get a majority pro-gun sentiment in a district, by necessity the politicians from that district will have to follow along, or be turned out of office. The antigunners know how this works. They have succeeded in creating the impression that there's a mass movement in favor of banning guns, and that's why the politicians are jumping on the bandwagon. I've seen this in my own area. Politicians who used to have an "A" rating from the NRA, within a couple of election cycles have earned an "F" rating. (And it never seems to go the other way.) It's clear that they don't have any autonomous principles about guns on their own -- they're just responding to what they think their constituents want. (Sen. Gillibrand from NY is a perfect example of this.)

Saw this yesterday and made me smile.

It's the difference between the bit of NOVA versus the rest of the state. And it's why I'm not concerned when folks worry VA is going blue.

Look where the numbers are. Northern Virginia probably has a third of the population of the entire state. Then when you add Charlottesville, Richmond, and the Tidewater, liberals have practically a lock on the state going forward. This is not your father's Old Dominion.
