I love seeing defense ammo tested on YouTube in calibrated ballistics gel. There are several guys who handle it well and do the science of ballistics some justice. While I love those tests, I am curious how standard hunting and/or defense rifle ammunition would fare at further ranges. From a practical standpoint most hunting bullets guarantee expansion down to the 1600-1800ish mark. I think it would be educational to see bullets at that speed striking gel. It would even be fascinating to see any projectile, hunting or not hitting further than 400 yards and I think it could educate us all on the limitations of a caliber/projectile at a given range. We all probably have seen videos of folks shoot an AR or even magnum calibers at ballistic gel at 50 yards, and in isolated cases out to 200 yards. Unsurprisingly it shreds the block. We also all have heard stories of deer surviving a magnum rifle shot, and stories of 22lr killing a bear. This seems to me, to be more informative than swapping hunting stories. Not that I don’t love hearing a good hunting story.

I am hoping for some good responses to this thread. If that is the case then I would be happy to go through the trouble of trying to contact the folks who make the more accurate videos and express interest in them testing things further. If I had a good base of responses to direct them to I believe it might have a better chance of influencing them to give it a try. I myself would be happy to send them components, or even loaded rounds(with proper shipping measures taken) to try out should they agree.

Entry angle matters a lot on such tests, it would seriously confound the results at longer ranges.

Buying the gel is the expensive part!
