This is probably a better question for Berry's directly, but I recently was able to find 123 gr projectiles for 7.62x39 (see https://www.berrysmfg.com/product/bp-762x39-312-123gr-sp )

They are rated as a maximum of 2000 ft/s. Looking at my reload data, the starting velocity (ex A1680) is 2260 ft/s. My Lyman 48th only lists one starting load at less than 2000 ft/s (at 1995 ft/s).

Thoughts?

All of my 7.62x39 rifles are semiautomatic, although I do have bolt action 7.62x54R and 303 British rifles that I could load with TrailBoss.

Thanks

Look up lyman lead loads. Because copper plated loads the same as plain base lead. From what I have read in the past.

I’ve yet to achieve load data velocities even out of the same length barrels. There are too many variables that determine how fast a particular load in a particular gun will travel-this why we have chronographs. Load up some ladder rounds & work up the loads for accuracy-fastest loads aren’t usually the most accurate.

I've loaded the Xtreme 123gr plated with 18.5-19.0gr of H-4198 with good results still cycled a SKS. Xtreme's bullet is rated up to 2000fps I have not gone past that.
The Hornady 8th shows a 123gr jacketed a start of 20.1gr of 1680 for 1900fps and 20.8gr for 2000fps their test firearm with a SKS 20" with a 1:7.5 twist.
If I were to try 1680 with a plated bullet with a max of 2000fps in a semi-auto I would be using a Lee collet crimp.

I have many boxes of Berry's plated bullets in .38 caliber, for my revolvers. Every single box says to not load them to more than 1250 fps. Do you have the original boxes the bullets came on?

Read post #1 again.

My thought is that I have never found the most accurate load in any firearm, of any caliber, at any speed, to be one that used a plated bullet.

If you are looking at them because they are cheap and available, first think about why they are both.

After that buy them and see if they will do what you need them to do. If they can, that’s a win.

If you exceed “maximum” of a bullet, it’s generally quite obvious.

I have found the Xtreme plated does well in a SKS at about 2000fps the brass falls about two feet away from where you're shooting.
The accuracy is good and the recoil is mild, I think its worth a try. Again my experience is with H-4198 with the Extreme plated bullets. I think this is a load my wife would enjoy shooting.
