Best Gloves for Cold Weather Shooting?

I didn't freeze my butt of today at the range...but my hands cut the day short. NJ is getting cold, and 30 degrees with wind is too cold without gloves on. Yeah, you ever load everything else into the range bag and car and forget that one important thing? Like the day I shot my 10/22 single shot because all the mags were sitting at home!

Anyway, anyone have any good recommendations for warm gloves you can still load ammo and shoot with?

Nomex flight gloves have been recommended to me.

Ideally, you want two pairs of gloves -- a thin, inner pair that will let you perform fine movements (like loading magazines, squeezing triggers, and so on) and a more bulky outer glove for warmth when not performing those tasks. Nomex or Isotoners are good for the first (as also are wool gloves available at Wal Mart). For the outer pair, I like wind-proof mittens.

watercraft gloves. made from the same material as wetsuits. thinner tho. i use them for riding my motorcycle at night.

It is that time of the year, isn't it?

After a couple pairs of flight gloves (nomex) and a variety of other assorted gloves I currently have a pair of Larken neoprene gloves with a thin leather palm.

Not the best, since I start to sweat in them if I am doing anything strenuous, but they work ok.

The search for that perfect glove which keeps your hands warm and lets you shoot is never ending...

I will have to try out the 2 layer approach. I remember taking my bulky "ski" gloves off to load last year, and brr... It's amazing how one little firearm (well, a collection I guess) spawns so many accessories

Yah. that's right. If latex gloves are used to give extra warmth to motorcycle gloves, in shooting it's nomex flight gloves!

I'm a HUGE fan of the Mechanix series gloves, I have a pair of the M-pact gloves in "stealth" like above. They're just about the perfect in my eyes, just thick enough for plenty of protection but thin enough for delicate work.

I use "flippy" mittens.

To you folks in the south.... Mittens where the covering for the fingers folds back to expose bare fingers.(Usually to the second joint.)

When you are done shooting, the top of the mitten folds back in place, and is held by either velcro or magnets.

These are 2 part, thin inner gloves with excellent grip and dexterity, and over mittens with the flip back finger and thumb. They claim thier proprietary Re-tain insulation rsponds to temp by physically changing the openness of the weave and the insulating properties. I just know they work.
I use the liners by themselves in milder weather.
I saw them recently for $40 a pair but I think I paid about $30. worth every penny.

I was about to ask this same question. My thing is I need gloves for shooting, and more importantly doing construction. I need some very tough, very warm and very thin gloves so I can use my hands as well as possible for fine tasks. Preferably not a 2 part system either. Anybody have any reccomendations?

Thirty above? HA! Try shooting at Rabbit Creek this time of year. The range faces Cook Inlet and gets some seriously cold winds. Thankfully they built some heated semi-covered stations. When I'm away from a heater I stick with double or tripple gloves, an outer glove hooked over the shoulder via a long line and either a wool liner or a wool liner and a poly liner underneath. Poly alone is usually not enough.

I vote for flippy mittens with Thinsulate. They might not provide the absolute best grip for shooting handguns, but they will work. They are the best in a floating blind when you're freezing in the marsh an hour before sunrise. I like them better than my GoreTex/Thinsulate hunting gloves from Cabela's.
