I'm looking for a 185-gr JHP optimally. I know they don't really expand at their speeds, but they do pack a fairly good punch and are fairly accurate. I've looked at MidwayUSA, but their prices are fairly unspectacular.

Anyone know of a good place to buy?

Thanks!

Thanks, guys. Mostly defense. It'll be part of an emergency preparedness kit.

Regarding "Cheaper Than Dirt," I've found that so often it ain't. MidwayUSA drives me nuts because it's almost impossible to order anything without having to backorder something. I gave up on them after about 10 minutes.

On some things they are, on others they aren't. I like them because the service is good, the shipping is usually next day and you can tell what is in stock before you try to buy.

I used to buy a lot of practice ammo from MidwayUSA too--mostly Mag Tech--but not any more! The prices have doubled in two years!

You're going to find that with .45 ACP, cheap practice ammos come mostly in 230 gr fmj. Of these, I like CCI Blazer the best. It's ugly and cheap, but it burns clean and works great, and at $13.99/50, it's a good deal.

With a little Hit & miss shopping, you can find some less expensive 185 gr jhp. to play with...

For self-defense in an urban setting, the fast, frangible round makes sense. The Double Tap 185 grain Gold Dot .45 ACP fits that bill nicely! While it ain't cheap, it's decently priced at $29.95/50, and I'd recommend you shoot 150 of them in the gun they're planned for, then save the rest for bedside duty. This is my choice for SD/HD in my G21.

For cheap practice ammo, go Natchez:

For SD/HD ammo, go Double Tap:

These all look good. Even the Cheaper Than Dirt site seemed to have some okay deals. I would have thought that buying 50/box over 20/box would show some savings, but not really. Round for round it's very close.

A lot of people have guns in the U.S., but there are surprising numbers who have only one box of ammo or so for those guns. In the event of a national or local emergency, people would be in pretty tough shape—and it's one reason anti-gunners want to go after ammunition. My father has a Sig Saur .45, but when I offered to buy him a few boxes of ammo for it, he said no. When I pointed out that it wasn't the smartest thing to have a nice, expensive gun and only half a box of ammo, he relented and I bought him some. Plus, he had round nose ammo, which is a horrible man stopper, even in .45ACP. The lighter weight 185 achieves better speed and somewhat better accuracy, plus it's got greater stopping power.

Corbon 185DPX +P expensive but they work. If you want a lighter round
As for 230 ball that the round the 1911 was designed to shoot It is accurate . As for a man stopper worked very well for around 80 years
Bet has put down more people than all the HP combined .
I have never felt under armed with 230 ball or 230HP I use the 185 in my 3" compacts

This is the same problem I have run into, as I prefer to use 185 gr. in my Commander and Officers models. I check all the local shops, gun shows, and online; just can't find any out there. One that I don't recommend is the Winchester BEB ammo; had way to may FTFs with the excess lead on the bullet nose hanging up on the feed ramp. I've decided that if I want use 185 gr. bullets, I'm going to have to reload them myself.

You know in looking at the prices on line for practice ammo it doesn't seem like the deal is an better (or in a lot of cases a lot worse) than the deal I can get a Bass Pro Shop or Walmart.

the-armory.com has some really good prices on ammo right now. I just ordered a case of DPX from them.

all the prices of ammo has doubled in the last two years. it is not just midway. that is one of the reasons i started reloading again. especially for practice ammo. on hunting or personal defense ammo, i can probably do as good as the factory, but without a chronograph, i am just guessing. i also agree with the cheaper than dirt, being not, at least always. many times i have checked them, and they wern't. on some things yes, but overall, no. it is just a name.
