Best Rifle/Scope Combo Under $500

Marlin Model 60 is a great and accurate 22 autoloader.

I can put 14 rounds into a ragged 2" hole at 25 yards with mine. It wears a vintage Tasco (Japan) scope but really anything will work on 22 caliber. "Swift" is a good brand you can find on ebay for small bux. I have a Swift 4X32 scope and it's the clearest thing I have ever looked through, the scope is from 1985 and I got it off ebay for $30.

Cheers,
Craig

+1 for Mossberg ATR or Steven or Savage. I wouldn't get a COMBO deal...get the rifle and then get the most glass you can for your needs.

The difference between C&R and FFL01 is only a $25 transfer fee.

I would not select a "battle rifle" to shoot accurately at long distances, and let's be honest. C&R guns are "battle rifles", lovely, history soaked, wonderfully engineered, but not purpose built for accuracy.

If I had to shoot long range on a tight budget, I would go with a used Savage or a new Stevens, both are available in 308.

The difference between a Savage and a Stevens is the heavy barrel and the accu-trigger. Though it's been said that the Stevens is very accurate.

Then some good glass. I'd be scouring eBay for some good used glass, or get a refurb Nikon (or similar) from SWFA - they have Nikon Profstaff for $99. But to shoot at long range you may want more power.

Good luck,
