So, I am working as a gunsmith at a large shop in Tucson Az. and over a period of time get mobbed out of the job. broken tooling, screwing with my jobs etc. I am assuming now because of my Law Enforcement background and my gunsmithing abilities, and the fact that I was one of the few that wasn't an alcoholic or pot head in the shop, I forgot that life is all perception versus reality, some people truly hide behind religion, anyway I just got a following of customers, and after upsetting the thin skinned folks I am now black listed...and unable to get a job in a shop..fortunately I have the ability to laugh at those folks..Anyway any body have a similar experience working in a shop and how do you overcome it without getting lawyers involved.

Welcome to THR! :)

My experience has been that shop owners while in competition do in fact talk among themselves. That does not mean they place great stock in what they tell each other regarding employees. A reasonable and smart shop owner when smith shopping will generally give a new smith a shot if the person meets the criteria sought. Smiths sell themselves based on their work and skill set.

As to lawyers? Good luck on that note as I doubt it would win you anything. With a law enforcement background you should know that.

A good smith will sell himself based on his workmanship. Your options are pretty simple as I see it. You can hopefully get on with another shop or start out on your own solo depending on what tools you own. That's about all I see for options. If your work was quality work as you say and you had a loyal customer following if you get out on your own you should have no problems. Get a table at a local gun show and show your work. Go solo and network yourself.

get a business license and incorporate and run it out of your home

Huh?

"... mobbed out of the job." (?)

Your skills being present are less important than;

Having been LE
Level of ability (I assume you mean your skill level was high enough to intimidate)
Not drinking or smoking stuff
Some weird non specified religious issues

Then - you were working in Tucson, got "black listed" locally yet are in Prescott.

Sounds like a personality conflict migrating to third parties to me.

Are you the same guy they fired on 'Suns of Guns' TV last week??

If so, you had it coming!!

Good gunsmiths, welders, machinists, plumbers, and other tradesmen are hard to find, and often slightly eccentric, or even downright anti-social sometimes.
They have to be if they ever want to get any work done.

But they never ever get blackballed, if they are good at what they do.
And not just a legend in their own mind.

Sounds like a deep seated personal or personality problem to me.
On your part.

Anyone else have a hard time reading this? The situation also feels... odd. I can't quite place it. Seems we're not getting the whole story.

OP, what are you trying to accomplish?

Quoted for truth.

It has been my observation that people who have also taken the risks and dove in starting their own small business in their field of expertise also tend to have a strong "type A" personality.

It can be hard for a so called alpha dog to swallow their pride and grin and bear it on the customer service end, what happens is your business can suffer. Put out high quality work and have good service, a loyal customer base will follow. Run your mouth and rub folks the wrong way, you will have trouble even if you do great work.

It sucks, but that is the way it is.

I don't think they're the same. Here's a link to the image of the guy who quit. Here

I recently met a guy staggering around that said he came up with a way for missiles to defeat GPS jamming and showed me the patent application. He complained he was put on indefinite leave from his job. I was trying to tell him to quit drinking and change his act, because he will never change a big corporation.

Then a woman doctor in the hood caught me talking to the guy, and suggested I avoid him, because "He is not well socialized".

There is a conflict, good engineers are so hard to find, and yet they are not much use if no one can work with them.

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the conditions that surround him... The unreasonable man adapts surrounding conditions to himself... All progress depends on the unreasonable man." - George Bernard Shaw

This is one weird original post. He has not yet answered any questions from others.
I go with what rcmodel said.
If the OP has anything to add, he should post it, quite soon. And explain some of his "phrases".

I don't believe that's the guy rcmodel was talking about, it's about 'Tom' (wrong name maybe), he was sort of a hot head and thought he knew it all. Couldn't get along with other employees, etc.
