First, a few bibliographical details:

American Rifle, a biography, by Alexander Rose. It was published in 2009 with a recommended price of $20.00.

That said, it is a very good book about rifles in the US. The writer was very thorough in his research and showed to be quite knowledgeable in the history of firearms and cartridges, and of rifles in particular. The book begins with the French and Indian war and progresses to "gun's of the space age." It is an easy to read and not dry historical reading, but is a well presented book, and I recommend it to all interested in the topic. I just thought I would share my opinions with ya'll and recommend a good book. BTW, I have no affiliations with the author or publisher, so this is not an advertisement, but a review.

It's a good read.

I especially appreciated the clear depiction of just how badly the Springfield Armory screwed over the the rest of the Army with the M-14 over T48/FAL fiasco - from the rejection of the British .280 intermediate cartridge through to the lies about using Garand tooling to produce the M-14. The history of post-war small arms could have, should have, been considerably different.
