A Santa Ana, California police officer and a suspect remains hospitalized in stable condition after both were wounded in a gun battle.

The officer was wearing a protective vest but the bullet hit him in an exposed area between the vest and his belt buckle, said Santa Ana Police Lt. Bob Chavez.

The officer, who was not identified, underwent surgery Saturday for a gunshot wound to his chest. The suspect, 28-year-old Jose Maciel of Santa Ana, was treated for several gunshot wounds to the legs, said Chavez.

Police said the wounded officer and his partner were on routine patrol when they noticed the suspect's Honda stopped in the middle of a street with a crowd around it.

When they made a U-turn and pulled up behind the car, the suspect sped off and drove a short distance before stopping in a driveway.

The suspect then jumped out of the car and fired several shots through the windshield of the police cruiser, Chavez said.

The officers got out of their car and returned fire, hitting Maciel. Maciel was wanted for a parole violation, Chavez said.
