Can't get the stock off my 10/22.

I have a Ruger 10/22 International. I need to get the stock off so I can tighten the barrel (is wobbly).

The International does not have a barrel band so there appears to be only one screw holding it together. When I completely remove the screw the action/barrel is definitely loose, but it won't come off.

I can move the action/barrel front to back about 1/4 inch, but it will not separate from the stock.

BTW, yes, I centered the safety. But there's not even enough play between the stock/receiver for the safety to contact the stock.

What am I missing?

10/22 Take down

Have you tried centering the safety by moving it half way between 'on safe' and 'off safe'? Also, when it does come apart make sure none of the pins holding the action fall out, especially the recoil pin- this is the one closest to the rear of the receiver. Don't ask how I know, but I can tell you that mine shot okay without it but better with it.

Yes, I centered the safety. I still cannot move the action at all (up and down, that is).

There's something else holding the action in the stock.

From the Ruger manual.....(I edited it for length)

1. Sight leaf down, hammer cocked

2. Barrel band (Doesn't apply)

3. Loosen (don't remove) the takedown screw.

4. Put the safety in the middle

5. Swing barrel-reciever upward away from the forearm of stock. Don't let two pins fall out.

The rest doesn't apply if you are not taking it completely apart.


It might just be stuck a little and need a few taps.

Probably a tight fit and needs light tapping with a plastic mallet.

...I have found there aint nothin' can't be fixed with a bigger hammer.

I have to hold my safety switch in the center position while taking mine out of the stock. Man...how long has it been since I've had mine out?

If it's the international model, is there a nose piece or cap at the front of the stock that might be causing the problem? Just a wild-ass guess, I don't have one here to look at.
