Carl Gustaf 30-06 ID?

My friend has a 30-06 that he inherited and asked me if I knew anything about it. I didn't. I thought maybe you guys could help. The reciever is samped Carl Gustaf Stads Gevarsfaktori with a crown over a C and a 3 over 64 (3/64 like a fraction). Anybody have a clue what this would be and what it might be worth. He was thinking of drilling it for a scope mount but I told him to wait until I could get some info on it.

Carl Gustaf Gevarsfaktori is a Swedish firearms manufacturer most famous for their production of the Swedish M96 Mauser rifle, though they also made many sporting rifles. Since you say the rifle has a crown-over-C crest on the reciever, it sounds suspiciously like a Swedish military action. While some were made post-war into sporting rifles, even in calibers like .30-06, I would be very suspicious that it might still be in the original 6.5x55 Swedish caliber unless otherwise marked or modified from military configuration.

I would also strongly advise against drilling-and-tapping it, the actions are fairly valuable unmolested.

Is it military, like this, or a sporting rifle?

It is definately a sporting rifle and is marked 30-06 caliber. It appears that the rifle was originally built as a sporting rifle(not sporterized).

The post-WWII Carl Gustaf rifles are not surplus military; they use a completely new streamlined action designed by Gunnar Larsson and are (AFAIK) unique in the design of the bolt locking lugs, which are angled outward to provide a non-bind feature (seen from the front, they look a bit like "snow angel" wings).

I don't know if they are still made or imported, but they were available in the 1990's in many calibers, including .30-'06, .270, and 6.5x55.

Surely those late Carl Gustav sporting rifles are drilled and tapped.

I have seen Husqvarna rifles in calibers including .30-06 on '98 actions, maybe there are some similar marked Carl Gustav.
