Congressman's Reply to my HB 1022 Concerns

Heard back from my Representative today. His e-mail is below*. From the way he "talks the talk", it is hard to believe Mr. Allen's "Walkin' the walk" has earned him an F from GOA. Couldn't find Mr. Allen's NRA score.

Dear Mr. Pawley:

Thank you for contacting me about restrictions on gun ownership. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

Law-abiding citizens in this country have a constitutional right to own guns. In Maine, hunting is a tradition that is important to Maine people and vital to our economy. I support the right to bear arms, and I believe in a state's sovereign right to establish its own gun laws. I do support federal restrictions on the ownership, possession, or use of firearms by convicted felons, persons arrested for domestic violence, and the mentally ill.

Again, thank you for contacting me. I will keep your views in mind when considering legislation on this subject that comes before the House.

Sincerely,

Tom Allen
Member of Congress

I can second...

...what was written earlier about MCs (Members of Congress) never seeing our letters. I worked in the field office of a popular Texas Congressman during junior college, and I can confirm he never saw letters from constituents. Still, I do think there's good in writing these folks; if nothing else, it educates staffers, many of whom can be ignorant about firearms.

It's interesting that Mike Sturla is guided by his feelings. Basically I feel that he is unfit to hold office, should be sent to prison, and never be elegible for parole. It's my feeling, I really feel it deeply, and it would make me feel very happy if it were done right away. Feelings are good.

I jot brief notes on the bottom of those printed postcard the NRA sends out for members to mail their legislators on key issues.

On occasion I get them back with a note from the legislator. A few months ago one of them returned the card with a letter saying that he is an NRA member too, completely agrees, and to please continue mailing those cards.

If you notice in the update on HR1022, all of the co-sponsors are Democrats from liberal states like California, Mass, New York, etc... This is likely going to the judiciary vote, and then we get to see what our letters do when it hits the House floor. BTW, I love the letter blaming Bush for all the world's problems. It shows that the dems aren't interested in what the people say, it's what they want to hear.
