Converting the Mini-14

A LNIB mini-14 is being re-sold to me but Im wondering, before I cough out the dough, can I convert this from semi-auto and add a full-auto mechanism (without discarding the semi-auto mode)? 2nd - is it possible to convert the stock with a foldable stock ala galil style?

If you are in the United States then ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! What you are describing is highly illegal for 90% of the public. Unless you have a SOT then do not do this.

If you are in another country where this is legal, I don't know of any drop in trigger groups etc. that will make a 14 select fire.

Folding stocks are available and generally legal, depending on your state of residence.

You can buy a folding stock for the Mini-14 through places like MidwayUSA, Sportsman's Warehouse or many gun shops.

But there is no way to convert it to a full-auto without raising the eyebrows of the BATF in your direction. What you are proposing is pretty much illegal in the eyes of the federal government. Don't even go there

Even if it was legal to do the conversion, the cost would be prohibitive for the license and taxes alone. I don't even think there is hardware to do a full-auto or select fire conversion.

The Springfield M-14 as issued by the military in the early 60's had a select-fire switch and that could be installed by a unit armorer as needed for squad-level use. But even those parts were carefully controlled in the arms rooms.

You can buy a legal full auto Mini-14, called the AC556, for around $8,000-$10,000.

To everyone wondering where my area is, Im in RP (Rep. of The Philippines). I really want to install a full auto select fire on this one. I have a few reputable gun technicians I know that I think can convert this one but Im hoping to hear other technical opinions first.

combatantr2, part of the problem is that THR doesn't allow public discussion of illegal activities and while converting a Mini-14 isn't illegal where you are posting from, it is here in the United States.

So we have to keep a close eye on these discussions to make sure they don't cause any trouble for the forum.

I imagine that it is possible for a gunsmith to convert a Mini-14 to full-auto by fabricating the parts personally. I've seen some Phillipine guns that were built from just the receiver into full-autos that were very impressive so I know there is some talent there.

You will probably have a problem getting factory Ruger parts to do that though since those are difficult to come by even for people who can legally own them.

Couple of guys I used to work with contrived a trigger device that would cam the trigger using a cranking motion. There was no actual change to the firing mechanism of the gun. This too, is probably illegal (in the U.S.).

My point for bring it up is that it didn't take much rapid-fire action through the notoriously light barrel on the Mini-14 to trash its accuracy. For this reason I question whether it would be a good candidate for full auto on a regular basis anyway.

I would suggest you get a breakdown for a M-14 as its principal of operation would be identical. I will not discuss it in any other detail other than it is important to have the hammer release AFTER the bolt is closed and home. Do not attempt to slam fire the 5.56mm. by riding the bolt. This is not only dangerous but unreliable.

Personally, I never felt the mini was robust enough to go full auto. I don't know if the AC556 is a beefed up version.

As I understand it...

The standard military-police version of the Mini14, the
AC556, has a full auto trigger group that requires adding
metal to the receiver to accommodate the full auto parts
(quite unlike drilling an extra hole in an AR or AK).
So even if you were doing a legal conversion, it would
be cost-prohibitive.

Back on topic, closed bolt weapons are often difficult to convert full auto because of the timing on the release of the hammer. After doing some searching and learning, I've realized that the easiest weapons to turn full auto or select fire are Open bolt to Closed Bolt semi autos that haven't had thier trigger groups messed with, like an added hammer when the gun isn't supposed to have one. These guns usually have a sear that catches a pin carrier in the semi auto version (ex: UZI) and to turn the gun full auto, you have to.....think real hard.

Even the AC-556 wasn't really meant to be fired in full auto. I've heard guys complaining about the plastic on the handguard warping after 4 mags on rapid fire, even after extensive modifications.

I have shot one in full auto and I wasnt that impressed, fun yes, but not the ideal full auto weapon.

My dad's thinking about getting one when he comes home next month. Hopefully, the paper work will be complete by the time his next r&r comes around.
