Critique My Rifle

Not suggesting it, just bringing it up to see what you all think for this scenario but...

suppressor? if you can keep the OAL down, seems like it'd be worth it for noise and flare reduction.

by the way, I think that's a great set up you have.

...wrong HD gun! The proper HD gun will always be a pump or semi-auto shotgun.

no it's not. I'd take any AR any day over any shotgun.

Just add a set of flip-up sights, and you're done with the rifle itself. I have a Troy rear sight and a Yankee-Hill front sight/gas block on my AR.

If your magazines aren't Magpul pMags, get them. I would also consider a few 20-round mags if you insist on using your AR for home defense, which I personally think is not an optimum solution. For home defense, I would get a semi-auto pistol and/or a 20-gauge shotgun.

One last thing - in a home-defense situation, you're more interested in a weapon that is light and highly maneuverable. That means the shortest barrel you can get away with. A 16-inch is a good compromise, but a 14-inch mid-length gas system would have been a better choice.

Have to agree that back up irons are a must. Just go with Troy, and you'll never have a worry. Will I really like the reticle of the EoTech, I went with an Aimpoint on my newest AR. And definately get a weapon light. Otherwise, you have a good HD rifle.

If you believe that then it means you have no real life experience with home defense with an AR or any other rifle.
The .223/5.56mm round will go right through cinder block...FMJ or soft point. If you shoot inside your home and miss (which you are likely to do) the bullet(s) will go through the inner walls of your home and more than likely through the outer walls! Do you want to be liable for accidently shooting an innocent person inside /outside your residence?
A shotgun...even with birdshot at close range ...5 feet or so..will make a fist-sized hole (depending on choke) in an intruder but it may only go through one inner wall (both sides) of your home if you miss.
The shotgun at close range has superior stopping power with minimal over penetration than any .22 centerfire cartridge.
Rifles are a poor choice for inside the home (HD).

Bluehawk, if you would like to discuss it further, feel free to start a new thread.

No need...have done my own research and have real life experience in police work with it.
But to address the examples in the links...we are not shooting into water...the velocity of the AR as stated is not normal...2500 fps...average velocity for 5.56mm is 3,000 fps.
Box of truth showed all weapons penetrating 7-9 or more pieces of sheet rock but I didn't advocate the use of buckshot or slugs, nor do I. I said birdshot (or could use up to #2 shot) and the non-fatal example cited about the guy shot at close range in your example is one of perhaps many hundreds of wounds from it that are fatal. I have investigated several of them.

there were actually two separate first-hand accounts of bird-shot causing only superficial wounds in that thead, and box of truth showed penetration wasn't impressive. and here's a link to a coroner report of a man attempting to commit suicide with birdshot in AU that took 3 tries (in all 3 the muzzle was touching his body) http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/173_11_041200/herdson/herdson.html

but the good news is we're still a mostly free country and we can make our own decisions and live with the consequences. we can agree to disagree

My AR is roughly the same. I have BCM BUIS and they do pretty well. I run a small tactical scope as well, but rely on the iron sights most of the time. If I were going to use an AR for home defense I'd find a way to allow me to aim well at night whether it be night sights, tact light, or laser.

I agree with the 20 rounds mags as well. I have to order the Magpul as none of the shops around here carry the 20 round.

Your Spike's rifle looks to be equipped right. Double check the staking on the BCG just to be sure. There's good information at m4carbine.net.

Before adding any kind of doodads to your rifle, get out & shoot it. Shooting your rifle will show you what works and what doesn't. A good shooting course will prove invaluable and give you and the rifle a good shake-down and help you understand it's strengths & weaknesses for it's intended use.

Over penetration is a concern but that is true whether using the AR, shotgun or handgun. Over penetration is controlled by ammo selection and awareness. The AR will work defending hearth & home but it's up to you to decide if it's right for you

get a light, and 10 or 20 rounds mag to keep in it, if you shoot a man with a high capacity rife you will get heat. of course makes no sence as people have glocks with 31 rounders by the bed in many homes. but they would have no issue in court.
i personally have a 12 guage loaded. and a .308 bolt for any threats man or four legged that may appear further away and by man i mean someone shooting in my direction from a larger distance. and my dad has an ar15 but it stays unloaded. because there are people in the house he uses hollowpoint .357 magnum rounds. reconsider your situation. because i rifle, unless you have frangible rounds.. will go through things.

I have bought a MBUS and a KAC RAS with VFG and Covers. All thats left is a surefire g2 in offset mount and a caa stock saddle. (i hate the cheek weld)
