IMHO - It's also not necessarily about pushing a political agenda. It's mostly about maintaining egos within a priviledged society, which can be supported by pushing certain political agendas.

It's about MONEY.
If I am not mistaken....The Discovery Channel is owned by the same people who bring you: The Military Channel, Science Channel, Turbo, TLC, Planet Green, Animal Planet, Discovery Health, HD Theater, and Investigation Discovery. They are in business to make money. They'll air whatever garners the best return on advertising airtime and the best ratings. To them, a program on gun violence is of equal value to muskrat habitats, top-10 submarines, or getting liposuction in Mexico. Their agenda is the almighty dollar.
