I am curious if any ammo available in the US has the air pocket or if any "HP" loads duplicate the performance of mil-spec ball.
Do any brands of 5.45 ammo duplicate Russian military loading?

I don't know of any ways to get "bonafide" 5.45 ammo. Wolff ammo is very close in matching velocity at 2936 fps w/a 60 grain bullet vs the Russian Milspec velocity of 900 m/s. I'm no mathematician but I believe that to be approx 2925 fps.
. Barnaul looks very promising also. They have some very intersting information on their website. Whether you can get that stuff advertised, such as the "Explosive charge for overloading of aviation gun" is anyone's guess!
I doubt if we can find a commercial load with the steel/lead mix of the original design, well, maybe if you can slip an order through to these guys.Prvi Partizan

This gets discussed a lot at AK-47.net. Consensus is none of the commonly available rounds (Wolf, Barnaul) have the same terminal performance as the military-issue round. They don't have the air pocket that destabilizes the bullet on contact.
If any of them make a hollow-point round, I wonder if that would be closer?

I dunno. The Barnaul 60gr FMJ that I have do have the air pocket. I sawed into one. They do not have a steel core like the 7N Russian ball. They vaporize waterfilled gallon jugs. Chief Thunder supposedly imported 5 million rounds of Bulgarian military ball but he has not been able to get it out of customs. The 70gr rounds have the same size bullet but no air pocket.

Drue is correct. The Barnaul 62 fmj is the same as military round except that it has a lead core instead of a steel core.
Although it is perfectly legal to import steel core (Milsurp) 5.45X39, I have a sneaking suspicion that our government is preventing it from coming in.

The Wolf FMJ used to have the air pockets, but I don't even see any of it anymore. The current HP rounds are just the FMJ with a hole drilled though. The cavity is not just a drill hole (stick a pin into the hollow point and you'll see, you can wallow it all over the place, nice big air pocket)... They don't have the steel core though.
