I was told that i can eliminate moisture & future rust problems on my revolver by putting silica gels/desiccant (the ones you see inside snacks/chips that says "do not eat").

Is this right? my s&w came with a metal case & the inside is made of a spoked-like foam material in which i placed some of these desiccants inside,
which i assume wont do its job that much since the foam pretty much compress the things (revolver, grips, etc.) inside the case.

or do i just have to put my s&w in another safe place with these silica gels?

any insights would be of great help to me. Thanks in advance!

I store all of my guns in 'Bore Stores' which are made of a grey flannel-like material. I have never had any rust on any gun.

My storage for my guns in my safe are:

Long Term- Cleaned and oiled gun into Bore Store Socks. These are silicon coated. Rest are more frequently used and stored in open gun rugs or safe holsters on the door. Long guns standing... Of course.

The Safe also includes 3 medium size desiccant bags and an 18" Golden Rod.

Whenever I check the desiccant saturation cards, they hardy are onto the next dot. But they get recharged every couple of months anyway... The safe is located in a basement "Gun Room".

have not had the safe long enough to really know yet.

But that said I bought a can of silica material. it is about the size of a one pound ink can ( if you know what that is) Instructions say to bake it at 250 degrees for a couple of hours every six month or when the silica pellets turn color.

If the guns are in a controlled environment, ie: heat, A/C it should not matter really anyhow.

The eggshell foam you speak of breathes so air does flow around the gun.

If I'm concerned with the possibility of rust, like leaving guns in my vehicles for months, I wipe them down with Corrosion X.

We used that on our helicopters that flew to and stayed on the offshore oil platforms in the Gulf Of Mexico. That salt atmosphere is one of the most corrosive places that you can operate machinery.
If there is a better corrosion preventer made we would have used it.

Great!! thanks to all for the input. i agree with M2 Carbine stating one of the most corrosive environment being near salt water.

il keep all your posts in mind.
