Just wondering, if Colt makes a 14.5" + 1.5" flash hider m4-style rifle that can be had without paperwork.

If so, what is the model number?

I believe the Colt 6921 is NFA only? (no perm attached FH)

Forgive me if I'm missing something but what's the point of doing the NFA thing (hassle and paperwork) just to lose one and a half inches of barrel?

I would prefer to have the 14.5" barrel myself, since it is the "correct" length after all (for the carbine gas system), but I'm fine with my 16". Heck, if I wanted to I could leave my flash hider off and still not have to worry about the length being legal. :neener:

After reading about ATF and police tactics, I won't be using any "permanently" attached flash hiders.

IIRC, the Chicago cop who is suspected of killing his wives had such a rifle and the cops broke the FH off, even though it was permanently attached.

The Colt 6920 does not qualify as stated in the original post. It is a 16" barrel with a standard threaded muzzle/A2 flash hider.

Your best bet is going to be to get a smith to acquire a 14.5 upper for you, and do a pinned 1.5" muzzle device of some sort before having it shipped to you. An A2 hider is not long enough for this; you will need a different muzzle device.

Colt doesn't make a 14.5 to legal 16 but several shops can fit up a permanent flash hider to a Colt barrel if you want one.

Yankee Hill Machining Phantom flash hider is excellent for this application.

The Chicago Police did not break the flash hider off of Drew Peterson's rifle, He had a 10.5" upper attached to a semi auto lower.

Why would somebody want a 14.5 to legal 16 over the usual 16" barrel?
1. the cool factor.
2. it is shorter and handier.
3. one can mount a bayonet if one was so inclined, can't do that with a 16" barrel.

Why is there even a bayonet lug on a 16" barrel rifle?
1. The cool factor.
2. In a pinch you can use the lug to open beer and soda bottles.
