Just curious if you use one physical grip/hold on all your pistols, or if your grip/hold changes depending on which style you are shooting, as in 1911 vs Glock.

I only ask because I always used one hold for everything but have found that a very high grip on my XDM makes me more accurate with that pistol but it is not a grip I can replicate on my 1911 because of the safety.

Just wondering what others do.

i use different grips for different pistols, mostly to avoid fouling various controls.

Are you referring to the thumb safety? Do you ride the 1911 thumb safety?

I think so. pretty sure any variations are due to differences in frame shape. All I have is Glocks, 1911's, and Ruger 22 pistols though.

JTQ--Thanks for the link. I do not ride the safety, but I will try that. It would let me get the higher hold.

You're welcome. Note when Gunsite's Ed Head gets on the safety early in this GunTalkTV video (about :40 in)

If you're always on the thumb safety, from the point you grip the gun in the holster, to shooting it, to reholstering it, you'll most likely have fewer issues with the thumb safety, like forgetting to take it off to shoot, putting it back on to reholster, and your shooting will also likely improve.

I did a little dry fire exercise last night riding the safety. I will go to the range today and give it a try and report back.

I was trying to tuck my thumb under the safety or pushing it off to the side and it was not working. Riding the safety should give me that nice, high grip.

Riding the safety really steadiest things, but with my small hand it is a bit tough to do. Needs practice!

I guess I hold them all however is most comfortable. With revolvers I cross my left thumb over the top of my other hand. That really gets me in trouble when I go back to an autoloader and the first round the slide cuts up my thumb.

Yeah, I guess we do what we are use to doing, muscle memory or whatever. Comfort is surely part of the formula.
